miriam cooke
I have taught Arabic and Arab cultures at Duke University (North Carolina, USA) for 37 years. Particularly interested in gender, war and literature, I have published several books and numerous articles that focus on cultural production in individual Arab countries, especially Syria, Lebanon, the Arab Gulf and Egypt. My novel "Hayati" tells the story of three generations of Palestinian women through the lens of August 2, 1990, the first day of the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait. My current concern revolves around the Syrian revolution, the artists who hold on to it in their works and the refugee crisis.
