ha ha. having a moment of reflection about how insane the buddie arc in season 3 is. because of course we all know that eddie yells at buck for not being around enough and basically calls him a deadbeat dad <- guy he has known for like maybe 18 months at this point btw. and instead of this being a common fanon interpretation of an ambiguously-intended canon conversation, the show revisits this in a later episode and has buck say In The Text uh yeah eddie. you were right, actually. you and chris needed me, and i wasn't around, and that was fucked up of me to do. i'm sorry, and i'm not going to leave you hanging like that again. after eddie has already explicitly stated that he trusts buck with chris more than he trusts anyone else in the world (including christopher's two living grandparents, eddie's own sisters, his grandmother, the woman he pays to care for chris, and eddie's aunt, all of whom we have met in the context of the show up to this point). like. lol.

there's something so powerful in the fact that buck is always seeking advice from others. he needs a sounding board most of the time, and he doesn't have the most confidence in his own decisions. but eddie is the person who always recenters buck by telling him he doesn't have to be anything for anyone else or that he should consider what he wants first and foremost
meanwhile, eddie is used to going at it alone. he thinks he needs to put everyone else first. except he allows himself to be vulnerable with buck. he asks buck for help and advice when we don't really see any of the other main characters asking buck for guidance.
it's a beautiful dichotomy, especially with seasons 7b/8 where eddie's confidence has been shaken. based on 8x09/8x10, i think buck had some fear that he needed eddie more than eddie needed him, but 8x12 onwards has shown us how crucial buck has been to eddie's arc. they are both so good for each other, and 8b continues to make that apparent with every new episode

thinking about pink being eddie’s color of whimsy and joy, and he has worn it twice in the past two seasons. both times, it is tied to a choice eddie makes. he suggests the crockett and tubbs costumes for the bachelor party, and he chose to do the risky business dance after talking to the priest. however, buck is always connected to these scenes. buck and eddie wear the matching costumes. buck knocks on the door as soon as eddie finishes his dance. the narrative shows that eddie wants that whimsy. he wants what buck gives him. when he is with buck, he can just exist. because yeah, buck bragged about eddie’s silver star, but he has also bragged about eddie being the best dad for almost seven seasons. hell, eddie changed a tire, and buck told the story like eddie had found a way to achieve world peace. eddie doesn’t have to be anything to earn buck’s love because buck gives it freely. i think eddie sometimes feels his mother’s love can be conditional. he needs to earn it by proving his value. he followed his father’s lead by providing for shannon and chris instead of being present because that is the blueprint his parents gave him. he thought that was his role. conceal, don’t feel, just provide. it ended up costing him shannon. but now he knows that’s wrong. now, he can be silly and dance in his underwear without a trophy in sight, and buck still loves him. what a beautiful world.

i do Not know how to articulate this coherently but I’m thinking about buddie and points of view again and how it impacts which one of them we think is most likely to have a feelings realisation first. bc they both react to each other so differently and depending on whose perspective we get it can be hard to really know what the other person is thinking
and it's like, for buck every single thought he has about eddie is so loud so when you're in it with him, and you see the grand gestures and his reactions to eddie (whether it's when he's hurt or just existing) and you hear him talking everyone's ear off about eddie you think, ofc it's gonna hit him like a freight train one day when he realises what all of this really means!!!!! so it's season 2 or it's season 3 or it's season 7 or it's 8x11 and you're thinking buck has to be the one to figure it out first. he's so full up with everything he feels for eddie he's about to burst!!!
but then eddie's pov is so Quiet. it's lingering looks in buck's direction and observing him when buck isn't paying attention and these declarations of devotion that are, again, so quiet but so devastating. and everything about the way he views buck is so sure and settled and you watch season 4 or season 5 or 6b or 8x13 and think, eddie has to know on some level. it's there, in the corner of his mind, and he might not be ready to interrogate it yet but it's there.
and because we rarely, if ever, get both of their perspectives side by side in one episode it's impossible to truly know which one of them is closer to figuring it out or if in fact they both do have that thought in the back of their head. or, moreover, if they could ever believe the other person might feel the same way
and anyway i am clawing at the ground at the thought of an episode or a scene that allows us to see both. that lets us see them both react in real time to each other. especially now. especially with everything between them in the past 5 episodes. plant them in front of each other and linger on both of their faces. show me both of their reactions if they touch or hug or say something that potentially means more than they're letting on. it might make my heart stop beating but damn what a way to go that would be
