Since our founding in 2006, we have evolved to offer three distinct services—Consulting, Fiscal Sponsorship, and Research—that provide the scaffolding and expert facilitation needed to strengthen and sustain diverse knowledge communities. In pursuit of our mission, we aim to shift the information landscape toward equity, interdependence, and alignment for greater impact.
Just as we work with both emerging and established knowledge communities to understand, evaluate, and plan their growth and development, we strive to apply tools like our Community Cultivation Framework internally to ensure that our skills, infrastructure, and offerings evolve as our organization matures. Over the years, Educopia has navigated various lifecycle stages:
1
Organizing and developing services, tools, or shared resources to meet a need held in common by constituents.
Educopia was created to host and provide administrative infrastructure to the MetaArchive Cooperative and related projects. Initial funding for Educopia came from the National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation Program (NDIPP); At the time of our founding, we had ~2 staff members!
2
Demonstrating value and validity, by broadening constituent base and sphere of influence.
Our projects and community portfolio began to broaden, even as our funding streams diversified into a diverse grant portfolio. As we explored various Research projects and welcomed the Library Publishing Coalition onboard, our project and support staff quickly increased.
3
Scaling up efforts in order to establish a stable and sustainable level of operations.
The publication of the Community Cultivation Field Guide in 2018 marked a significant milestone and made more visible Educopia’s expertise in community cultivation as an area of practice. In line with the continued expansion of our project portfolio and permanent staff, we re-articulated Educopia’s vision and mission.
4
Evaluating changes in both external and internal environments to determine how to remain vibrant and relevant.
We implemented a shared leadership model, refined an iterative strategic framework, and introduced tactics to continuously strengthen our work with knowledge communities navigating their own transition. Showcasing our efforts to operationalize equity from the inside-out, we unveiled our new brand, website, and Vision and Mission statements.
Our three Co-Executive Directors oversee Educopia’s day-to-day operations, identifying new opportunities, strategic partnerships, and ongoing directions for the organization’s workstream activities.
Our team wears many hats and includes facilitators, strategists, designers, researchers, and coordinators. We come from diverse backgrounds, bring multidisciplinary skills to the table, and share a passion for networking diverse knowledge communities for collective action.
Educopia’s work is overseen by an all-volunteer board representing the professional and academic fields that have an active interest in our mission and vision. The Board of Directors collaborates closely with the Co-Directors to ensure that all of Educopia’s efforts align with its mission and that operations remain financially stable and sustainable. Board members are not employees of Educopia and do not receive compensation for their service, as stipulated in the bylaws.

As Educopia works towards a more equitable knowledge landscape, we begin by modeling equity in our own ways of working.
Educopia embraces diversity and interdependence from the inside-out, reflected in all our services and functions. This commitment is evident in our policies and benefits, which include unlimited paid time off, planned office closures for collective rest, collaborative decision-making processes, a 403(b) retirement savings option, opportunities for learning and development, and more. All of this exists within a transparent, respectful, and caring environment designed to foster professional growth and personal well-being. Educopia is a fully remote organization.
