De tout temps, la question du travail a été fortement imbriquée à celle de la construction de l'identité. Travailler transcende l'activité économique et sert des fins bien plus larges que le revenu mensuel immédiat sensé en être le stimulus direct. D'autant diront que travailler c'est gagner sa vie ; se faire une place en société, être reconnu pour ses qualifications, et garantir la pérennité de son nom. Cependant, pour les groupes d'individus les plus vulnérables de la société, le travail ne représente souvent qu'un instrument supplémentaire de l'oppression et la subordination. Cette étude se propose d'explorer le travail caché des femmes du souk de Tioute, au sud du Maroc, et l'un des principaux mécanismes de leur subordination ; la vente intermédiaire. En abandonnant 1 leurs produits au perron de la maison, elles permettent l'invisibilisation de leur travail et celle de leurs compétences ; perpétuant ainsi le cycle de la précarisation de l'artisane Marocaine au profit d'obscurs vendeurs intermédiaires. Contrairement à l'hypothèse de Meriem Naji qui condamne les riches distributeurs du produit fini, nous soutenons que l'amoralité de l'acte provient principalement de la vente intermédiaire ; point relais entre production et distribution. 1. Le souk au service du genre : Visibilisation et invisibilisation La présence de femmes-marchandes au souk est une présence très stigmatisée, « une transgression du code de respect selon lequel il [est] honteux pour une femme de s'exposer en public » 2 . L a m q a d d a m | 6 Background I am one of those people that believe that social and economic development the way we know of today is not the most proper one. The economy-driven world we have inherited has taught us that concepts like profit, gain, and money, are to be the only dynamos for our human development. Yet, if it is evident that they are important components to welfare, it still can contribute to the ongoing oppression of some social groups, for example women. As reported by Vubo, "The expansion of capitalist interests has been at the basis of the marginalization and disempowerment of women in the periphery of the world capitalist system" . In parallel to these economies, we can, sometimes come across alternative approaches to development that engage all of the most vulnerable populations. These are new forms of development which can benefit women even in places like Morocco where half of the citizens cannot read nor write and where women still are targets of heavy gender segregation due to the weight of traditions. It is with that idea in mind that I got interested in the work of women cooperatives in Morocco, with the assumption that they could possibly channel women's empowerment through financially emancipating the women, educating them, and giving them the social visibility and networks they lack.

Background: Our study analyses the main determinants of refusal or acceptance of the 2009 A/H1N1 vaccine in patients with cystic fibrosis, a high-risk population for severe flu infection, usually very compliant for seasonal flu vaccine.
Methodology/Principal Findings: We conducted a qualitative study based on semi-structured interviews in 3 cystic fibrosis referral centres in Paris, France. The study included 42 patients with cystic fibrosis: 24 who refused the vaccine and 18 who were vaccinated. The two groups differed quite substantially in their perceptions of vaccine- and disease-related risks. Those who refused the vaccine were motivated mainly by the fears it aroused and did not explicitly consider the 2009 A/H1N1 flu a potentially severe disease. People who were vaccinated explained their choice, first and foremost, as intended to prevent the flu’s potential consequences on respiratory cystic fibrosis disease. Moreover, they considered vaccination to be an indirect collective prevention tool. Patients who refused the vaccine mentioned multiple, contradictory information sources and did not appear to consider the recommendation of their local health care provider as predominant. On the contrary, those who were vaccinated stated that they had based their decision solely on the clear and unequivocal advice of their health care provider.
Conclusions/Significance: These results of our survey led us to formulate three main recommendations for improving adhesion to new pandemic vaccines. (1) it appears necessary to reinforce patient education about the disease and its specific risks, but also general population information about community immunity. (2) it is essential to disseminate a clear and effective message about the safety of novel vaccines. (3) this message should be conveyed by local health care providers, who should be involved in implementing immunization.

En Afrique, la maîtrise du risque infectieux en milieu hospitalier reste une question cruciale. Bien souvent, les analyses se limitent à une évaluation des décalages entre des normes techniques et des pratiques hospitalières. L’insuffisance des connaissances théoriques est régulièrement invoquée, conduisant à un cycle de formation-évaluation qui semble largement voué à l’échec. Une approche anthropologique peut aider à la résolution de ces problèmes. En proposant une lecture des dimensions sociales et culturelles des risques sanitaires, le rôle de l’anthropologue est d’élargir la compréhension de ces dysfonctionnements. Il s’agit de penser l’hôpital comme un espace où s’articulent diverses dimensions sociales, éthiques, médicales et techniques. Témoignant de cet apport complémentaire dans le champ de la santé, de nouvelles pistes émergent d’une enquête menée à l’Hôpital National de Niamey. D’abord, la superposition d’espaces techniques et sociaux se traduit par une confusion dans les gestes. Les obligations sociales brouillent alors les chaînes gestuelles techniques. Ensuite, la prégnance d’un héritage historique définit un certain mode de délivrance des biens publics dont les manifestations se retrouvent dans le quotidien d’un hôpital. Enfin, des « mondes sensibles » différents et les normes techniques élaborées dans le contexte de la médecine moderne deviennent des abstractions en l’absence de correspondances perceptives. Ici, l’anthropologie jette un pont interdisciplinaire entre les préoccupations de santé publique et les questions d’économie morale et décisionnelle.

In this article, we propose a history of Médecins Sans Frontières’s control activities to fight human african trypanosomiasis. Through this history are enlightening medical innovations in the scope of diagnostic and treatment of the disease. MSF investing will focus successively on (1) epidemiological and clinical diagnosis, (2) existing drugs evaluation and (3) development of new therapeutic proto- cols. After a period of isolation, MSF will have to cooperate with others international health organi- zations. Specific questions on medical practice and research in the south countries will represent the major issues regarding medical innovation.

Introduction : Depuis les années 1970, l’OMS prône la valorisation des médicaments issus de la médecine « traditionnelle ». Au Burkina Faso, malgré une volonté politique de promotion des phytomédicaments, leur prescription par les professionnels de santé reste faible. L’objectif de cet article est de mettre en lumière les logiques qui sous-tendent les pratiques de prescription des phytomédicaments par les médecins burkinabés.
Méthodes : Inscrite dans une démarche qualitative, cette étude a été réalisée à Ouagadougou auprès de médecins généralistes et spécialistes. Les techniques mobilisées sont l’entretien individuel semi-directif et l’observation directe. Au total, 47 entretiens ont été réalisés au niveau de Centres médicaux avec antenne chirurgicale (CMA) et de centres hospitaliers universitaires (CHU).
Résultats : Nos résultats montrent que les phytomédicaments n’ont pas été inclus dans la formation initiale des médecins enquêtés. Les seules sources d’information pour les médecins sont alors les collègues, la famille, les patients ou encore les médias. Leurs perceptions de ce type de médicaments sont ambivalentes allant du « produit naturel » au produit exposant à un risque du fait du manque d’études. Les pratiques de prescription s’inscrivent principalement dans quatre logiques : expériences personnelles et professionnelles, jugement des patients, validation par des essais cliniques et prise en compte du risque iatrogène.
Discussion : En l’absence de cadre académique fort, la connaissance des phytomédicaments s’est acquise par voie informelle. Les normes et références techniques restant faibles, plusieurs logiques subjectives s’imposent dans la construction des pratiques de prescription.
Conclusion : Au-delà des dimensions symboliques et subjectives expliquant la faible prescription des phytomédicaments, notre étude invite à s’interroger sur la responsabilité politique et institutionnelle dans la faible intégration de la médecine traditionnelle dans le système de soins burkinabé.

In hospital care, management of the risk of infection represents a crucial issue. Nevertheless, this question remains a neglected area in anthropological research, especially in African countries. To shed new light on this question, we conducted an anthropological investigation in the infectious disease department of a hospital in Niger. Daily observation of the work of the hospital staff for a total period of 6 months was spread out over 2008 and 2009. During our prolonged stay, we also collected 64 in-depth interviews of health care workers and attendants in the department. This study method made it possible to describe many of the practices and discourses related to the issues of medical and personal care and hospital hygiene and to compare the practices observed to standard principles for preventing hospital-acquired infections. Our ethnographic attention to the behavior of the actors showed the absence of formal spatial segmentations between different activities. The care provided by the untrained relatives serving as personal attendants introduced territorial enclaves governed by home hygiene standards into the interior of technical spaces. At the same time, privatizing equipment and space for their diverse activities, the medical staff disrupted technical chains and generated the recurrent crossing of microbial geographies. These results allow us to offer two principal guidelines for improving the quality of care and the management of risks of infection in hospitals in West Africa: (1) the essential role of the attendants in the care provided to hospital inpatients must be officially taken into account, especially by including them in the organization of medical hygiene procedures; (2) the different overlapping technical activities and social activities in the work space must be limited by their geographic and architectural segmentation.

The urgency and constraints inherent in certain disasters force Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières to take risks or otherwise be resigned to great suffering, disability, and avoidable death. While abandoning ineffective habits and official protocols may lead to the provision of less effective care, cause harm, and squander resources, failing to take the initiative means accepting a critical medical situation.
The authors of this book describe and analyze the emergence of new medical practices in humanitarian situations: in other words, how can we create a momentum for change benefiting affected populations? Taking advantage of lessons learned can help us better understand how to operate in specific settings, with the goal of replacing the non-therapeutic practices that doctors and political decision-makers too often tolerate, citing the poverty and ignorance of affected populations or under the pretext of complying with international recommendations, economic constraints, and public authorities.
This book is a group effort rather than a collection of articles written by experts working independently. The authors are seven doctors, a pharmacist, and three sociologists. They based their work on a review of MSF archives and publications, along with interviews with former and current managers who were or are involved in the process of bringing medical innovation to humanitarian settings.

Nowadays, NGOs have an increasing place in the global management. These entities appear to be included in globalisation processes. Nevertheless, they can not be considered as mere tools of world governance or states policies. Through the study of a pilot project of Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) for the control of drug-resistant tuberculosis in Georgia, the overall complexity of these mechanisms of politics formation in this organization is enlightened.

The article examines the photographic archives of the 1990s conflict in Algeria. Based on an ethnography carried out in the present, it traces the trajectory of photographs produced by press photographers in the 1990s, and questions the place they occupy today, both as material objects and images. Questioning the notion of archive(s) in the Algerian context, the article attempts to describe the contexts and practices that have helped shape these photographs over time, focusing on the images and their relationships to the actors.

L’article propose une réflexion autour des archives photographiques du conflit des années 1990 en Algérie. En s’appuyant sur une ethnographie réalisée dans le présent, il retrace la trajectoire de photographies produites par des photographes de presse dans les années 1990, et questionne la place qu’elles occupent aujourd’hui, à la fois en tant qu’objets matériels et images. Interrogeant la notion d’archive(s) dans le contexte algérien, l’article propose une description des contextes et des pratiques qui ont participé à façonner ces photographies à travers le temps, en s’intéressant aux images dans les rapports que les acteurs entretiennent avec elles.
