The aim of our research work was to survey and evaluate the unique landscape values of cultural h... more The aim of our research work was to survey and evaluate the unique landscape values of cultural heritage, nature, and landscape heritage in the immediate vicinity of the Church of the Cistercian Abbey of Bélapátfalva and on Bél-kő hill. The cadastral survey combined
with field visits was carried out using the MSZ 20381/2009 Hungarian Standard, then the unique landscape values were evaluated using the MSZ 20381/1999 Hungarian Standard evaluation method. Based on our results, we presented the unique landscape values, cultural-historical and natural treasures of the Abbey Church and the Bél-kő educational trail, which has been operating since 2016. An informative map indicating the unique
landscape values has also been structured for touring the area, which can be used by guests arriving here later.

According to the database of the Hungarian Central Statistical Office, Remeteszőlős is the smalle... more According to the database of the Hungarian Central Statistical Office, Remeteszőlős is the smallest settlement in Hungary. Due to the young nature of the settlement and its modest settlement image, its unique landscape values of public interest are not sufficiently known. The aim of our research work was to assess the protected values and unique
landscape values of the settlement, and then to prepare a draft educational trail for the Local Government. Our research methods included literature analysis, data processing, questionnaires, field trips, taking photos and surveying unique landscape values according
to MSZ 20381/2009 standard. Based on our results, we prepared a settlement cadastre, assessed the type, main properties, and endangerment status of unique landscape values.
We would like to transfer our research results to the local government so that the values learned and surveyed can be presented in Remeteszőlős.

DESCRIPTION OF THE CHARACTERISTIC SOIL PROFILES AND INDICATION OF THE DEGREE OF SHEET EROSION IN VERPELÉT

In the administrative area of Verpelét settlement, we excavated 22 soil profiles in July and Augu... more In the administrative area of Verpelét settlement, we excavated 22 soil profiles in July and August of 2014 to show what soil types build up the area, as well as the extent of soil erosion in each profile. The description of the soil profiles was carried out based on the methods of the FAO (2006) and Novák's Soil Practicality (2013). In the study area, we found chernozem brown forest soils (Chernozems), alluvial meadow soils (Fluvisols), humous sandy soils (Arenosols), humous alluvial soils (Fluvisols), meadow chernozem soils (Chernozems), Ramann brown forest soils (Cambisols), and brown forest soils with clay illuviation (Luvisols). We examined the sheet erosion in the vicinity of Verpelét using three methods: (1) GIS method considering slope category values, (2) examining the geomorphological character of the environment around the soil profiles, and (3) determining the sheet erosion within the specific soil profiles using the methods of Kerényi (1991) and Kerényi and Martonné Erdős (1994). The first method did not indicate any erosion-prone areas in the Verpelét vicinity; however, we were able to detect greater soil erosion in the excavated soil profiles. Using the second method, 32% of the excavated soil profiles were strongly eroded, 36% were moderately eroded, 4.5% were weakly eroded, and 27.5% showed accumulation conditions. However, our third method, which focused on specific soil profiles, indicated that 32% of the excavated soil profiles were strongly eroded, 63.5% were moderately eroded, and only 4.5% were weakly eroded. The question arises as to what causes this significant difference between the various methods, and where the significant sheet erosion in the examined profiles in Verpelét actually originates from. In order to investigate this question, we examined the 1st, 2nd, 3rd Military Survey Maps, the topographic map from 1990, the CLC18 satellite imagery and the 2023 version of Google Earth. The previously forested areas on these maps were already characterized by extensive arable land, and later by arable and vineyard areas. Today, Verpelét has become predominantly an actively cultivated agricultural landscape. Therefore, the significant sheet erosion can be attributed to the spread of inappropriate land use methods and significant anthropogenic impacts (β-euhemerobic level).

There is actual question what kind of connection could be shown between the rate of soil erosion, land cover categories and hemeroby levels? How can the intensity of antropogenic effects influence the rate of soil erosion? We did some research work in the North Hungarian Region, in Cserépfalu in 2014. In Cserépfalu, the northern areas are under nature conservation and belong to the Southern Bükk Mountains while the southern dissected pediment is the extensive agricultural territory. We described the soil types in the southern areas using the soil description method of FAO. We collected data about the rate of soil erosion, the land cover types, slope angle, slope forms, slope aspect and data for the relief conditions too. We could point out the sheet erosion around the 15 investigated soil profiles and we could found 3 strongly eroded, 8 medium eroded and 4 accumulated soil profiles. The land cover categories were given based on FAO category system and topographic map from 1990. Our results showed that land cover categories were changed in time and it caused the change of hemeroby levels as well. The intensity of land cultivation in investigated areas was changed. We could point out in some cases that the stronger soil erosion rate was caused by former land cover system. In summary, some former agricultural areas were changed and became as an abandoned area so that the antropogenic effects were decreased in extensive agricultural areas in Cserépfalu. Our results can be compared with another pediment dissected by valleys where extensive agricultural areas are characteristic in Hungary.

Landforms and recent deposition on a ryolite tuff surface The study area, the Hegyes-kő hill is s... more Landforms and recent deposition on a ryolite tuff surface The study area, the Hegyes-kő hill is situated 10 kilometers far away from Eger, in the northeastern part of Demjén, in North Hungary. This territory was declared as Local Nature Conservation Area as a cultural heritage in 1979 and after that it got the protected status as Nature Monument because of its cultural, geological and geomorphological landscape values in 2011. Our research aim was to investigate its geomorphological levels and landforms developed from the boundary of Pliocene and Pleistocene period and to analyse accumulated sediments. After field works, we have made geomorphological map in scale 1:10 000 and we have analysed the grain-size composition, materials, and origins of sediments accumulated at the top of the hill. The Hegyes-kő hill is built up with Miocene Gyulakeszi Rhyolite Tuff Formation: non-welded rhyolite tuff layers. We have mapped Quaternary periglacial landforms, erosional landforms, mass movements and micolandforms in this territory. We could survey the grain-size composition of sediments and we could find gravels originated from the Bükk Mts. here. These sediments could show such a materials which was accumulated at the boundary of Pliocene and Pleistocene period (P/Q) or these sediments were redeposited from the higher surfaces here.

Natural and Cultural Heritage of the Meteora in Greece The Meteora (The Rocky Forest of Greece) i... more Natural and Cultural Heritage of the Meteora in Greece The Meteora (The Rocky Forest of Greece) is situated in the district of Thessaly, in the upper valley of the Pinios river, on the southern valley sides of the Andikhasia Mountains, in Kalambaka, in Greece (GPS coordinates are N. 29°42 ' and E. 21°37 '). This territory was nominated to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1988 as a complex protected area (cultural criterium: I., II., IV., V. and natural criterium: VII.). The protected area covers 375 ha. This article is about the presentation of the natural landscape features and cultural heritage of Meteora. This area is famous because of (1) its natural beauty, (2) man's interaction with his natural environment, and an unique example of the largest group of monasteries in Greece since 14th century, or (3) rare and threatened species (contains a concentration of raptors) and (4) remnants of the Greek and Byzantine culture. Sajólád is sittuated in the Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén county, in the microregion of the areas of Sajó-... more Sajólád is sittuated in the Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén county, in the microregion of the areas of Sajó-Hernád plains. The fluvial cone of the Sajó-Hernád plain is sittuated in 90–161 meters height above the sea level. We have done the research work about the territorial appearance of geological, geomorphological, botanical and zoological values since 2003. This region mostly consists of Holocene and Pleistocene sediments (like as loess and clay, washed loess, and infused loess). As geomorphological values should be mentioned: Holocene alluvium divided by backwaters and bedremains and Holocene fluvial terraces. We have categorized the spatial distribution of botanical and zoological values in the settlement and we could pointed out that the Sajólád Wood is the most interesting and valuable area here

The Castle Hill in Verpelét is a Tertiary volcanic parasitic cone situated in the eastern boundar... more The Castle Hill in Verpelét is a Tertiary volcanic parasitic cone situated in the eastern boundary of the Mátra Mts. Because of geological interests this territory was declared as a Local Nature Conservation Area in 1975. Its main geological values are the following: Miocene Badenien volcanic sequence, the structure of the composite volcano, the volcanic vent and andesitic volcanic plug, volcaniclastic deposits and the remnant of the postvolcanic activity. This territory was burried by different sediment layers after the Miocene volcanic activity and this composite volcano was exhumated by the Tarna stream during the Quaternary period. That is why we could examined different, varied Quaternary sediments here: slope sediments rich in volcanic detritus, slope clay, fluvial sediments, loess sedimnt (97–150 cm in depth) and frost-reven detritus in front of andesitic cliffs

In Cserépfalu, the northern areas are under nature conservation and belong to the Southern Bükk Mountains while the southern dissected pediment is the extensive agricultural territory. We described the soil types in the southern areas using the soil description method of FAO. We collected data about the rate of soil erosion, the land cover types, slope angle, slope forms, slope aspect and data for the relief conditions too. We could point out the sheet erosion around the 15 investigated soil profiles and we could found 3 strongly eroded, 8 medium eroded and 4 accumulated soil profiles. The land cover categories were given based on FAO category system and topographic map from 1990. Our results showed that land cover categories were changed in time and it caused the change of hemeroby levels as well. The intensity of land cultivation in investigated areas was changed. We could point out in some cases that the stronger soil erosion rate was caused by former land cover system. In summary, some former agricultural areas were changed and became as an abandoned area so that the antropogenic effects were decreased in extensive agricultural areas in Cserépfalu. Our results can be compared with another pediment dissected by valleys where extensive agricultural areas are characteristic in Hungary.

Landforms and recent deposition on a ryolite tuff surface The study area, the Hegyes-kő hill is s... more Landforms and recent deposition on a ryolite tuff surface The study area, the Hegyes-kő hill is situated 10 kilometers far away from Eger, in the northeastern part of Demjén, in North Hungary. This territory was declared as Local Nature Conservation Area as a cultural heritage in 1979 and after that it got the protected status as Nature Monument because of its cultural, geological and geomorphological landscape values in 2011. Our research aim was to investigate its geomorphological levels and landforms developed from the boundary of Pliocene and Pleistocene period and to analyse accumulated sediments. After field works, we have made geomorphological map in scale 1:10 000 and we have analysed the grain-size composition, materials, and origins of sediments accumulated at the top of the hill. The Hegyes-kő hill is built up with Miocene Gyulakeszi Rhyolite Tuff Formation: non-welded rhyolite tuff layers. We have mapped Quaternary periglacial landforms, erosional landforms, mass movements and micolandforms in this territory. We could survey the grain-size composition of sediments and we could find gravels originated from the Bükk Mts. here. These sediments could show such a materials which was accumulated at the boundary of Pliocene and Pleistocene period (P/Q) or these sediments were redeposited from the higher surfaces here.

Natural and Cultural Heritage of the Meteora in Greece The Meteora (The Rocky Forest of Greece) i... more Natural and Cultural Heritage of the Meteora in Greece The Meteora (The Rocky Forest of Greece) is situated in the district of Thessaly, in the upper valley of the Pinios river, on the southern valley sides of the Andikhasia Mountains, in Kalambaka, in Greece (GPS coordinates are N. 29°42 ' and E. 21°37 '). This territory was nominated to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1988 as a complex protected area (cultural criterium: I., II., IV., V. and natural criterium: VII.). The protected area covers 375 ha. This article is about the presentation of the natural landscape features and cultural heritage of Meteora. This area is famous because of (1) its natural beauty, (2) man's interaction with his natural environment, and an unique example of the largest group of monasteries in Greece since 14th century, or (3) rare and threatened species (contains a concentration of raptors) and (4) remnants of the Greek and Byzantine culture. Sajólád is sittuated in the Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén county, in the microregion of the areas of Sajó-... more Sajólád is sittuated in the Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén county, in the microregion of the areas of Sajó-Hernád plains. The fluvial cone of the Sajó-Hernád plain is sittuated in 90–161 meters height above the sea level. We have done the research work about the territorial appearance of geological, geomorphological, botanical and zoological values since 2003. This region mostly consists of Holocene and Pleistocene sediments (like as loess and clay, washed loess, and infused loess). As geomorphological values should be mentioned: Holocene alluvium divided by backwaters and bedremains and Holocene fluvial terraces. We have categorized the spatial distribution of botanical and zoological values in the settlement and we could pointed out that the Sajólád Wood is the most interesting and valuable area here

Because of geological interests this territory was declared as a Local Nature Conservation Area in 1975. Its main geological values are the following: Miocene Badenien volcanic sequence, the structure of the composite volcano, the volcanic vent and andesitic volcanic plug, volcaniclastic deposits and the remnant of the postvolcanic activity. This territory was burried by different sediment layers after the Miocene volcanic activity and this composite volcano was exhumated by the Tarna stream during the Quaternary period. That is why we could examined different, varied Quaternary sediments here: slope sediments rich in volcanic detritus, slope clay, fluvial sediments, loess sedimnt (97–150 cm in depth) and frost-reven detritus in front of andesitic cliffs

Nowadays, geological, Quaternary sedimentological, soil science and geomorphological research can... more Nowadays, geological, Quaternary sedimentological, soil science and geomorphological research can give new information for analysing and describing archaeological sites. In this article, we have investigated the ancient environmental and landscape conditions in the case of the Upper Palaeolithic archaeological open-air site situated on Gyilkos Hill in Andornaktálya, Hungary. We have analysed the geological situation, Quaternary sediments, soil and geomorphological conditions. Our results show that ancient people lived in a higher but separated and lowered pediment area surrounded by the Eger and Ostoros streams during the Aurignacian culture in the Upper Palaeolithic period (Würm glaciation). Slopes were dissected by dells and the heads of erosional valleys and this territory could be covered by cool continental steppe and tundra vegetation. Soil data show that medium-fertiled Chernozem brown forest soil developed here later which is the remnant of the new forested Late Glacial warmer period. This high, separated hilly territory could be well protected suitable for inhabitants to settle down. That is why archaeological surveys found a Palaeolithic open-air site here. We aim to use this complex research survey method at other archaeological sites.
