The Republic of Crimea (Crimean Tatar: Къырым Джумхуриети, Qırım Cumhuriyeti; Russian: Респу́блика Крым; Ukrainian: Республіка Крим) is an unrecognized sovereign state claiming the entire Crimean peninsula in the Black Sea, southeast of Ukraine and west of Russia. The republic declared its independence from Ukraine on March 11, 2014 after the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol reunified as a single united state amidst the Crimean crisis.[1] According to Russian-funded news agency RT News, the declaration was done in order to legitimize an upcoming referendum where citizens are expected to vote in favor of joining Russia as a federal subject of the Russian Federation.
