History and description

edit

Built as a private residence in 1927,[2] it has been operating as a wedding chapel since at least 1939 when owner Ollie McKee began performing ceremonies.[3] By the early 1940s it was called Gretna Green Wedding Chapel, named after the Scottish wedding destination of Gretna Green.[2] Elvis Presley visited the chapel in 1967, while planning his wedding to Priscilla Beaulieu.[2] According to Frommer's, Presley himself gave the owners of the chapel permission to use the Graceland name,[1] but in fact it was not renamed until after the singer's death, the same year that Elvis-themed weddings began there.[2]

The chapel is a small building, in the New England style, with a white picket fence. It holds 30 people.[1]
