Template talk:Infobox oil spill

Clarification is needed

edit

The infobox field |casualties= is defined at the template's documentation as "deaths or injuries associated with initial spill event (if applicable)" However, it is still unclear what the "initial spill event" means in this context. In reality, the issue is related to the Deepawater Horizon oil spill article which uses this infobox. The relevant field of the infobox at that article states: 11 dead. However, these fatalities were caused by the drilling rig explosion (there is a separate article called Deepwater Horizon explosion) which also was a cause of the later oil spill. At the same time they were not a result of the oil spill nor caused the oil spill. Therefore clarification is needed how and in which cases to use this field. Thank you. In my opinion, the 11 deaths during the explosion are correctly considered the casualties of the initial spill event for the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, because those deaths are a direct result of the event that directly caused the spill (regardless of the fact that the explosion has a separate Wikipedia article). Consider a more traditional oil spill: tanker collision such as the Venpet-Venoil collision. I would say the two deaths that occurred during the collision and ensuing conflagration were casualties of the initial spill event. I don't think "initial spill event" should be limited to the actual flowing of oil out of the side of the ship (for example), because almost nobody dies of that sort of thing, but rather expanded to generally include whatever action or actions precipitated this particular spill. Thank you, Johnson487682. That really helps. Beagel (talk) 16:36, 17 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
Johnson487682 reflects my thoughts exactly. The Deepwater Horizon explosion article is simply expanding upon the initial spill event, which is critical part of Deepwater Horizon oil spill. If it weren't for the shear size of this article, they would be the same article. - Aalox (Say HelloMy Work) 15:02, 23 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Map problem

edit

@Beagel: Please check the recent edit to this template which is showing "Lua error in Module:Mapframe at line 184: attempt to perform arithmetic on local 'lat_d' (a nil value)" at 2017 Ennore oil spill and MV Treasure oil spill. Perhaps that is due to missing or bad information in the articles? Johnuniq (talk) 10:49, 28 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Johnuniq: It was caused by non-standard way coordinates were issued into these templates. I fixed coordinates in these articles. Beagel (talk) 16:09, 30 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

location_map_zoom

edit

|location_map_zoom= causes a unknown para warning. It is in the documentation as a valid para, and looks useful in the one article that uses it, MV Wakashio oil spill, to change the default zoom level. Frietjes? MB 02:31, 6 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

User:MB, I regenerated the list of valid parameters. Frietjes (talk) 14:15, 7 September 2020 (UTC)Reply
