Ernest Coffin - English illustrator
editThere are many of his illustrations on the web - eg at http://www.flickr.com/photos/36844288@N00/4266687091/in/photostream/ - but finding information on him is difficult, even his birth and death dates don't crop up. Does anybody know anything more about him? Androstachys (talk) 21:12, 9 November 2010 (UTC)
- Bit of a challenge as you said not much comes up on a google search. Now this is a bit of original research and some of the may be wrong but I assume it could be Ernest Maitland T Coffin 1868-1944. He appears in the 1912 Census in Westminster where is listed as aged 43 and born in Stoke, Devon and describes himself as an artist. The Ernest Maitland T Coffin birth is in 1868 which is roughly right and the district is Plymouth which include Stoke Damarall. His wife is Almeida Coffin aged 38 and he says they have been married 10 years, although the only marriage that matches is in 1910 Ernest Maitland T Coffin and Almeida Roberts which was only a year before not ten! An Ernest M Coffin died aged 75 in Surrey in 1944. The 1891 Census shows a 22 year old Ernest M T Coffin as a Student of Medicine living with his parents in Hampstead, London, his father Thomas Walker Coffin was a surgeon. The early 1871 census shows him as two-year old at Molesworth Terrace, Stoke Damarel, Devon. All guess work. MilborneOne (talk) 22:13, 9 November 2010 (UTC)

I have been blocked from contributing to Commons with the following message You do not have permission to edit this page, for the following reason: Your IP address, 41.213.126.5, has been automatically identified as a tor exit node. Editing through tor is blocked to prevent abuse. Can anyone help? Androstachys (talk) 05:57, 15 November 2010 (UTC)
- (non admin) I suppose the first question is: Are you actually using a TOR (onion network)? Sven Manguard Talk 06:35, 15 November 2010 (UTC)
- Ok - the first answer is I go through a large and well-known service provider and I doubt that they have suddenly started using Tor (which I have not known about previously). Second answer/question is that if WP are happy with the status quo (whatever it is!), why is it Commons that have a problem? Androstachys (talk) 07:52, 15 November 2010 (UTC)
- You are not getting blocked on English Wikipedia because you are in the ipblock-exempt usergroup (so this problem must have happened here before). I have posted a note on the Commons admin noticeboard on your behalf. They should get back to you shortly. Regards. 7 08:18, 15 November 2010 (UTC)
- Also - posting your IP address here is your own choice, but it may cause you privacy concerns. If you would like your IP to be redacted (either now or after your issue on commons is fixed) please add the adminhelp template back in and let us know. 7 08:21, 15 November 2010 (UTC)

Paddlefish
editHi Androstachys. Can you please cite the information you added to paddlefish and fish ladder concerning the influence of metal in concrete ladders? What you say sounds plausible, and there are references on the web to paddlefish having difficulties negotiating ladders. But I cannot find a source concerning metal in concrete.. --Epipelagic (talk) 10:22, 6 January 2011 (UTC)

You currently appear to be engaged in an edit war according to the reverts you have made on Avatar (2009 film). Users are expected to collaborate with others and avoid editing disruptively.
In particular, the three-revert rule states that:
- Making more than three reversions on a single page within a 24-hour period is almost always grounds for an immediate block.
- Do not edit war even if you believe you are right.
If you find yourself in an editing dispute, use the article's talk page to discuss controversial changes; work towards a version that represents consensus among editors. You can post a request for help at an appropriate noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases it may be appropriate to request temporary page protection. If you continue to edit war, you may be blocked from editing without further notice.

The shell doesn't belong on a dab page without an article to link to. That leaves the dab page with only one link, so I've reverted it to the redirect it used to be. If an article on Pipsqueak, the shell, is written, or even a section in another article, then by all means re-create the dab page. PamD (talk) 08:12, 17 March 2011 (UTC)

Could Rhapta have been in modern-day Mozambique?
editAndrostachys - I am copying this piece (below) into your personal Talk-File because it does not look as if people visit the Periplus ... Talk-File all that often. Regards, David McNaughton; E-mail: DLMcN@yahoo.com
- . - . - . - Could Rhapta have been in modern-day Mozambique?
Does anyone have access to a copy of the "Periplus"? - either in the original Greek or in translation?
Carl Peters implies that it states that Rhapta lay, not at the mouth of its river, but some distance upstream, adding that this requirement would fit Quelimane quite well. But is he quoting the "Periplus" correctly?
Incidentally, remembering the successful Phoenician circumnavigation of Africa in 600 BC, it is by no means impossible that subsequent travellers would have ventured as far as the mouth of the Zambesi (or even beyond) - at the time when the "Periplus" was being compiled. I used to work in the Zimbabwean Meteorological Office, and can confirm that alternations in the coastal wind pattern did facilitate two-way journeys there. - . - . - . - --DLMcN (talk) 18:07, 1 July 2011 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Comprehensive Microbial Resource
editIf this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
A tag has been placed on Comprehensive Microbial Resource requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about web content, but it does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Big Money Threepwood (talk) 04:06, 22 January 2024 (UTC)
