DYK

Looking through the history, that was a batch of credits left over from a previous template that hadn't been addressed all day. I just gave them out and went on making the next template. The job was set up in a rather bizarre set of updates to T:DYK/N by User:Archtransit. It appears that he/she set up the credits before working on the template, then realised that not all were going to fit, and neglected to return the removed articles to T:TDYK. The "update" begins here, credit for the article is added here, and the final template here. I'm afraid that the article never actually made it onto the front page. Isn't it a POV problem when the Salahuddin article is mostly cited to a newspaper column by the subject himself. The self-bio is used as a cite to say that Salahuddin was the best young sportsperson in Bangladesh, eg the 2nd para. Thanks, Blnguyen (bananabucket) 00:55, 5 November 2007 (UTC)

I wouldn't say that articles based on autobiographies are inherently POV, although the reliability of these sources and the extent to which they establish notability could be challenged. I think in this case there are some POV problems. I have removed the sentence you referred to and another phrase that didn't seem neutral to me. The article also desperately needs some copyediting. If you think the article is still not neutral enough, feel free to remove the entry from the main page. I've noticed you temporarily uploaded Image:Hans Holbein d. J. 031.jpg from the Wikimedia Commons because it will be on the tomorrow Main Page. The {{Painting}} that redirects to Template:Infobox Painting is different from commons:Template:Painting, and the {{Creator:Hans Holbein d. J.}} which doesn't exist here is supposed to be copied from commons:Creator:Hans Holbein d. J. (maybe the prefix Creator: only applies to namespace in the Wikimedia Commons). I am sorry for the comment I made on the DYK. I think I spend too much time here, I need to take a wikibreak. I have no problems with international users, I only made that comment because someone called my edits to a page about Iranian terrorism, vandalism. Template:Did you know/Next update

Looking at your proposed next update, I'm a little uneasy about so political a hook being included during an election campaign. Wikipedia is bound to be attacked for favouring the campaigns of people it chooses to included on the mainpage and we aren't going to be able to afford everyone equal time. I know its a little unfair to the editor who has worked hard on the Tom Tancredo presidential campaign, 2008 article, but I don't its an appropriate hook. WjBscribe 13:23, 27 November 2007 (UTC)

Please forgive a newbie if he is using your talk page incorrectly. I am wondering why you deleted the Caucho Resin article. You comment just says advertising, but was there really NOTHING of value on that article? I would be happy to create an article about it if I knew anything about it. I was hoping that Wikipedia would have some information, as I don't even know what Resin is. I am also considering re-creating this page. While the original page may have been an advertisement, the fact remains that Resin is a useful piece of software, with desirable properties (e.g., the base server is open source, even though Caucho charges for an upgraded version (Resin Professional) and of course for support.

How do I know it's useful? The company where I work (not affiliated with Caucho) uses it for our main "cash cow" websites. I doubt that we're the only ones.

So, if the best available information is the company's own website, should we look for a less reliable, less complete (but "more authoritative") site that refers to it? This seems an odd situation, but it can't be _that_ rare in the world of rapidly changing software. Bgoldnyxnet (talk) 23:37, 29 January 2008 (UTC)

DYK ungrammatical?

Hi Carabinieri, and thanks for the quick response to my update request.

I just happened to notice though, that the first entry says the fish "can be found in coastal areas in as far away as South Africa, Japan and Vanuatu".

Hoyt library and DYK

I've restored it to the template because it's a December 3 article, and a rather good one - it just doesn't seem right to refuse it a place on DYK because we messed up the image allocation timing. Adam Cuerden ^talk 22:01, 8 December 2007 (UTC)

I'm with Carabinieri on that. Although strictly speaking the limit is five days, there is no reason why we can't exercise a little flexibility in the course of creating better balanced updates. Every main page element has exactly one image, so I think it would look rather odd to have two on DYK. Because I didn't have enough time to do it right away. User:EncycloPetey removed the entries from the next update page after I was gone, so I assumed someone else had taken care of doing the credits. DYK script

Once you purge your cache, you should see a new tab (next to "history" at the top) when you edit a user talk page or article talk page. On the user talk, it will be listed as "user talk dyk" and on article, it will say "article talk dyk". When you click on "user talk dyk", there are 3 menu options: "dyk-auth", "dyk-nom" and "unsigned2". Ignore unsigned2. When you are crediting the author of an article, click the first one. It will prompt you for the title of the article (no link brackets are needed). Press enter, and then save the page. For the article talk page, you just need to press "dyk talk no sig" and save the page. Does that clarify things? Nishkid64 (talk) 19:23, 15 December 2007 (UTC)

I noticed this discussion and I added it for myself. I had the same problem and I figured out my problem. My problem was the I needed to add Wikipedia as a Trusted website. I then allowed scripting from Trusted websites. It now works. I customized mine to take out many of the navigation menu items, for the seach box is off my screen on my 1024x768 screen. I run Wikipedia 2 of my computers: a wide screen and the 1024x768. You need to click "edit" to edit the talk page, and then first you get the "dyk-auth" and "dyk-nom" tabs. I hope this helps. I've gotten quite rusty at javascript I'm afraid, I got mine to more or less work and stopped tinkering. (as you can see if you look at it, it's pretty crufted up, and now there is stuff in it that doesn't work any more) I might suggest not invoking his at all, just mine, to see what difference that makes. Do you have ANY functions that add extra tabs with dropdown functions? Sorry that's not more help. ( replied here to keep most of convo together) One thing that helps a LOT is to run the "Error console" from within Firefox. Clear it out, then try to go to a page and use a function, see what it says as it runs. Often you will spot errors that way. Hello Carabinieri, I'm puzzled by the message you left on my talk page, since the Ludwig Fischer factoid is not currently on the DYK display or in the archive.

It's not a big deal, as I'd prefer that it not appear. The editor who nominated it got the facts wrong, somehow imagining that Ludwig Fischer had been Mozart's friend before Mozart wrote the role of Osmin for Fischer to sing. Hi. I'm a tad dubious about the move from Grossmarkthalle to Großmarkthalle. Personally, I have no strong feelings about this (as a native German speaker, I'd tend to use ß), but ß and ss are interchangeable in this case, and looking at the discussion about, say Voßstraße (or Vossstrasse), using ß is not, apparently, generally acceptable on English wikipedia. German portal news archive - a more prominent location?

Recently I started work on 2008 in Germany, an attempt to create a centralised, permanent, and (hopefully) well-cited chronicle of events in Germany - similar to other countries (eg. 2007 in Australia). Given your great work on the Germany portal (and its news section), I would like to invite you to join me in maintaining this page. As a long-term project, I was thinking of making pages for other years. That should help in making some sort of focus and highlighting what articles need work - there are Australian chronicles for every year since 1788 and they have proven very useful in article improvement. I think that's a good idea, I'll try to contribute. Many German magazines have been running Rückblicks of 2007 in the past weeks - Spiegel, for example, dedicated almost half of the December 31 issue to this. Excellent. Another good source of info that I've been using to start up the 2007 page is the monthly chronicles on the de-wiki (eg. de:Januar 2007). While not Germany-specific, they contain a lot of Germany-related events that the en-wiki might have missed. Once the 2007 page is complete, it should be clearer what a good format might be - the current format is simply lifted from 2008 in Australia. Resin Application Server Page deletion?

Please excuse me if this is the wrong place to ask this question

My name is Emil Ong and I work for Caucho Technology, the maker of the Resin Application Server. I noticed that you deleted the page for Resin Caucho_Resin in March 2007 as an advertisement for a website. I'm not sure if the page at the time was written in an inappropriate way, but the Caucho company did not author it. Nonetheless, we would still like to have a representative page in Wikipedia. In the meantime, the pages for other software, including commercial, closed source software, in this space remain available:JBoss,WebLogic,WebSphere,GlassFish,etc...

Most of these simply provide information about the company or group producing the software, the software itself, and links to the software's page. Is it possible to undelete the Resin page or allow us to reinstate it? We have no intention of violating Wikipedia's rules against advertising and conflict of interest, but we would like to have the same representation as these other projects. Hey, I added a section to this article on the whole "strike bike" thing, but am having a hard time finding a decent source for the end of the strike, since I don't speak german. I've reworked the paragraph a bit. The FAU really did little more than help sell the bikes. It only became involved in the strike months after it started. According to NZZ, a local newspaper, 1,805 bikes were sold, so I've changed it to "over 1,800" in the article. Personally, I don't feel it meets the GA criteria. There are still many gaps in coverage, as a result of the fact that the sources I had at my disposition weren't very comprehensive. Further, there is the problem that there appears to be a group that calls itself FORA and claims to be in the FORA's tradition to this day. Apparently it has been in existence without interruption since the 1930s. You can find its website under www.fora-ait.com.ar (I can't link the website, because it's blacklisted. I'm still working on trying to find sources for this period. I'll be getting the book "Argentina: from anarchism to peronism: workers, unions and politics, 1855 - 1985" by Ronaldo Munck, et al, soon. As an admin, I'm sure you're aware that WP:PROD is intended for uncontroversial deletions; looking at the history of this particular article, it's clear that any proposal to delete the article will be controversial. More task forces and subprojects: As this WikiProject covers a very large topic area, it is helpful to add more task forces that focus on specific aspects of Germany. Project news Cities and municipalities task force The task force dedicated to creating and improving articles on all German cities and municipalities is happy to announce that there are now (at least) stub articles for all municipalities of Germany. Now the task force is looking for help in fleshing these out a little bit. The current phase of activity for the task force is to copy in infoboxes from the articles in German Wikipedia. If you want to help, even just for a few articles, look at the instructions and links here Article Assessment: There are now way over 26.000 articles tagged as part of our Wikiproject and many still need either an importance or a quality assessment. Also there are many more out there that do need to be tagged like approx 8000 municipalities. If you would like to help take a browse through Articles needing Importance assessment or Articles needing a basic quality assessment.

Thanks for your comments on my T:DYK (self-) nomination of Goliath Awaits. It was my first nomination and in retrospect I wish I'd had time to go to the library to find additional sources for the article prior to making it. I didn't realise that many of the google hits were for pay-only content, so I didn't anticipate it being quite so hard to find good sources.
