Invite to CLINMED et al.

I've noticed that you've been editing medicine related articles -- from your contributions. We have a place where the medically minded people hang out: WikiProject "Clinical Medicine". You are invited to join or just browse the talk page, which is also known as the doctors' mess.

Seeing that you're in cardiac surgery-- if you have some time, the CABG article could use some expert eyes. :) If you're looking for info on how to do references see WP:CLINMED/Writing_medical_articles.

Surgery is generally covered very poorly here on Wikipedia, so I hope you can change that a little with your edits. If you're interested, I've been working with User:Ksheka to improve myocardial infarction; since he's an interventional cardiologist, maybe a surgeon's view can provide some counterweight . Pumphead

Thanks for the welcome and the links; the link on editing medical articles is quite helpful. I've noticed how poorly some of the surgery articles are written; there are a few I plan to update as I find time. Right now the #1 is pumphead - the plagiarized text from the National Enquirer prompted me to start editing the wikipedia pages. Dlodge 20:46, 10 December 2006 (UTC)

I read through the pumphead article. Funny and interesting at the same time. I bet the editors of the NEJM are now kicking themselves for publishing Newman's study... with the National Enquirer's use of the article for entertainment purposes. Nephron  T|C 22:57, 11 December 2006 (UTC)

It's isn't like the NEJM to publish such a study without a control group. However CABG has been the most studied procedure in the history of surgery, and Newman's study made Type II neurocognitive deficits a hot topic in cardiovascular research. (maybe I should define type I & II neurological injury somewhere). Awareness of the issue has been much of the driving force behind the recent innovations in OPCAB. Unfortunately, the whole "pumphead" issue has been used extensively by physcians and corporations promoting stenting as superior to cardiac surgery. A PCI vs. CABG would be a good wiki page, undoubtedly subject to lots of editing and likely a NPOV tag a few times.

Hello Daniel & thanks for the suggestion on my talk page. Although I have 3 layers of spam protection I've elected to take your advice & delete my email address from my home page. When I initially registered I ticked the box "Enable e-mail from other users", but haven't yet worked out how to use templates to tag the home page.
May I compliment you on your initiative in gaining both B.Eng & MD degrees which will be of great benefit in furthering the application of computer science to the science & art of surgery. As a personal observation, there needs to be better dialogue between those in clinical practice with those who design instruments, for all from nurse upwards, in order to restrict the ever increasing complexity of operation which allows 'the hand of Murphy' to be of potential danger.

re: Glasair Aviation

The articles are looking good, and I am interested. I'll see what I can add over the next few days; while I used to go to the Arlington Fly-In yearly and hang out at the S-H factory, things have changed over the years and they're no longer as public-friendly as they once were. I wasn't aware that New Glasair and New GlaStar had merged, for example. Anyway, I'll add what I can, and scrounge around for photos of Glasairs and GlaStars. ericg ✈ 23:04, 14 January 2007 (UTC)

Renaming of the minimaze page, etc.

Dr. Lodge, would you have time to revert some of your edits on the minimaze page? It's now entitled Maze procedure (which I think we agreed needs its own page), and begins with "The maze procedure is a collection of cardiac surgery procedures...", which is not gramatically correct. The part about the Maze is intended only to give background regarding development of the various minimaze procedures. To highlight this, perhaps the heading that now reads "The Cox maze procedure" should read "Origins of the minimaze procedures: The Cox Maze" or similar. Dr. Lodge, there are now separate pages for the minimaze procedures and for the Cox maze procedure. Everything was moved correctly so previous history is intact. Cardiology task force, tasks you can do:

request for communication re graft sequelae

What happens as when venous grafts deteriorate? Do they do so slowly or fail quickly at the end? This should be an important detail as to whether or not “revascularization” should be examined after 10 or 15 years. I imagine that the vascular architecture (anastomoses, calibers, etc.) would be able to adjust to some extent if the process is slow. If the actual “closure” is abrupt, that might argue for a wait and see approach or a alternatively necessary intervention (even if the procedure as an original intervention has not been demonstrated to be efficacious).

The first edition of The Pulse has been released. The Pulse will be a regular newsletter documenting the goings-on at WPMED, including ongoing collaborations, discussions, articles, and each edition will have a special focus. That newsletter is here.

Spotlight - Simplified article translation

Wikiproject Medicine started translating simplified articles in February 2014. We now have 45 simplified articles ready for translation, of which the first on African trypanosomiasis or sleeping sickness has been translated into 46 out of ~100 languages. This list does not include the 33 additional articles that are available in both full and simple versions.

Our goal is to eventually translate 1,000 simplified articles. This includes:

• WHO's list of Essential Medicines[2]
• Neglected tropical diseases[3]
• Key diseases for medical subspecialties like: oncology, emergency medicine (list), anatomy, internal medicine, surgery, etc.

We are looking for subject area leads to both create articles and recruit further editors. We need people with basic medical knowledge who are willing to help out. This includes to write, translate and especially integrate medical articles.

IEG grant

I've (CFCF) taken on the role of community organizer for this project, and will be working with this until December. The goals and timeline can be found here, and are focused on getting the project on a firm footing and to enable me to work near full-time over the summer, and part-time during the rest of the year. This means I will be available for questions and ideas, and you can best reach me by mail or on my talk page.

Wikimania 2014

For those going to London in a month's time (or those already nearby) there will be at least one event for all medical editors, on Thursday August 7th. See the event page, which also summarizes medicine-related presentations in the main conference. Please pass the word on to your local medical editors.

Integration progress

There has previously been some resistance against translation into certain languages with strong Wikipedia presence, such as Dutch, Polish, and Swedish.
What was found is that thre is hardly any negative opinion about the the project itself; and any such critique has focused on the ways that articles have being integrated. For an article to be usefully translated into a target-Wiki it needs to be properly Wiki-linked, carry proper citations and use the formatting of the chosen target language as well as being properly proof-read. Certain large Wikis such as the Polish and Dutch Wikis have strong traditions of medical content, with their own editorial system, own templates and different ideas about what constitutes a good medical article. For example, there are not MEDRS (Polish,German,Romanian,Persian) guidelines present on other Wikis, and some Wikis have a stronger background of country-specific content.

• Swedish
  Translation into Swedish has been difficult in part because of the amount of free, high quality sources out there already: patient info, for professionals. The same can be said for English, but has really given us all the more reason to try and create an unbiased and free encyclopedia of medical content. We want Wikipedia to act as an alternative to commercial sources, and preferably a really good one at that.
  Through extensive collaborative work and by respecting links and Sweden specific content the last unintegrated Swedish translation went live in May.
• Dutch
  Dutch translation carries with it special difficulties, in part due to the premises in which the Dutch Wikipedia is built upon. There is great respect for what previous editors have created, and deleting or replacing old content can be frowned upon. In spite of this there are success stories: Anafylaxie.
• Polish
  Translation and integration into Polish also comes with its own unique set of challenges. The Polish Wikipedia has long been independent and works very hard to create high quality contentfor Polish audience. Previous translation trouble has lead to use of unique templates with unique formatting, not least among citations. Add to this that the Polish Wikipedia does not allow template redirects and a large body of work is required for each article.
  (This is somewhat alleviated by a commissioned Template bot - to be released). - List of articles for integration
• Arabic
  The Arabic Wikipedia community has been informed of the efforts to integrate content through both the general talk-page as well as through one of the major Arabic Wikipedia facebook-groups: مجتمع ويكيبيديا العربي, something that has been heralded with great enthusiasm.

Integration guides

Integration is the next step after any translation. Despite this it is by no means trivial, and it comes with its own hardships and challenges. Previously each new integrator has needed to dive into the fray with little help from previous integrations. Therefore we are creating guides for specific Wikis that make integration simple and straightforward, with guides for specific languages, and for integrating on small Wikis.

I am editor-in-chief of a project in development in Wikiversity called Wikiversity Journal of Medicine (more information at Wikiversity Journal of Medicine/About).

I'd very much appreciate if you did a peer review of an article that was recently submitted to this journal:

• Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder

This is essentially a shortened version of the Wikipedia article on that subject, in own words.

The peer review is preferably written in the corresponding talk page, and should include a declaration of any conflicts of interests. Comments should be constructive, include both strengths and areas for improvement, and be referenced whenever possible. Otherwise, the journal has no strict rules regarding the structure and length of a peer review. Still, more guidelines for peer reviewers can be found at: Wikiversity Journal of Medicine/Peer reviewers.

We prefer peer reviews to be returned within 3 weeks, and appreciate in any case a reply regarding whether you are interested or not in this contribution.

Voting in the 2016 Arbitration Committee elections is open from Monday, 00:00, 21 November through Sunday, 23:59, 4 December to all unblocked users who have registered an account before Wednesday, 00:00, 28 October 2016 and have made at least 150 mainspace edits before Sunday, 00:00, 1 November 2016.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. Announcements After over a decade of silence, the WikiProject Aviation newsletter is making a comeback under the name The WikiEagle. This first issue was sent to all active members of the project and its sub-projects. If you wish to continue receiving The WikiEagle, you can add your username to the mailing list. For now the newsletter only covers general project news and is run by only one editor. If you wish to help or to become a columnist, please let us know. If you have an idea which you believe would improve the newsletter, please share it; suggestions are welcome and encouraged. On 16 December, an RfC was closed which determined theaerodrome.com to be an unreliable source. The website, which is cited over 1,500 articles, mainly on WWI aviation, as of the publishing of this issue. Luft46.com has been added to the list of problematic sources after this discussion. The Jim Lovell article was promoted to Featured Article status on 26 December after being nominated by Hawkeye7. The Raymond Hesselyn article was promoted to Good Article status on 4 December after being nominated by Zawed. The Supermarine Sea King article was promoted to Good Article status on 22 December after being nominated by Amitchell125. The William Hodgson (RAF officer) article was promoted to Good Article status on 26 December after being nominated by Zawed.
