It's that special, special time! No, grandma's not coming over. No, not time to clean out the fridge. It's sidebar redesign voting time! Yes, the community has narrowed it down to 3 different options, and a vote for the same old original sidebar is a choice one could vote for as well. Voting for multiple options is allowed, and discussion on the whole shebang is right there on the vote page itself.

You're probably getting this message because the sidebar fairy (JoeSmack for now) noticed you commented on the project at some time over on at Wikipedia talk:Village pump (proposals)/Sidebar redesign. Lovely. JoeSmack Talk 06:34, 15 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Your recent reversal of patent nonsense on prime numbers

edit

Since the editor seemingly very recently acquired a brand new user, perhaps you could try to put a messag to User_talk:Laljag, stating I reverted your edit since it was nonsense, but welcome anyhow in an as friendly manner at possible :-) ? JoergenB 12:41, 6 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Right; I should do this more often, but it gets quite tiresome after the hundredth revert. Granted, template messages like Template:Welcome have been created to make the work easier, but finding a template that fits the occasion is almost as much work as writing one. your revert

edit

The images will look the same. And infoboxes are far more flexible. Are you familiar with infoboxes? --Jtir 12:07, 7 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

You're just introducing unnecessary complexity and inconsistency. Please explain what you are going to use this extra flexibility for. Fredrik Johansson 12:15, 7 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
Text alignment can be controlled. I have centered some captions and left aligned others. The alignment may need some tweaking. Further, they eliminate clutter -- namely the small resize icon that indicates the image is a thumbnail. In some cases the result has been a smaller box, which saves screen space. Also they support titles above the boxes if editors feel those would be desirable. Have you looked at any of the edits I have made? --Jtir 12:24, 7 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
If you don't like the size, icon and alignment, you can edit your own stylesheet to that end. I want image boxes in this article to look the way they do in other articles when I view them, thank you. Fredrik Johansson 12:40, 7 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
Most readers of the encyclopedia probably don't have your ability to edit stylesheets. What differences have you noticed after the changes I have made? --Jtir 12:56, 7 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
Another advantage to infoboxes is that images and captions can be stacked more densely, as this sandbox example shows. --Jtir 13:21, 7 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Stegosaurus

edit

Hi Fredrik!

I'm planning to send Stegosaurus to Featured Article candidacy. The article failed its first nomination, but user:Casliber and I have been hard at work fixing stuff. As you're listed as a member of Wikipedia: WikiProject Dinosaurs (founder, actually), I figured I'd drop you a line and see if there was anything you thought should be added/removed/cited on the article before it is sent to FAC. We definitely want it to pass! :)

(Feel free to make any edits on the article itself, comment on the talk page, or leave a note on my talk page). Thanks for your time, Firsfron of Ronchester 19:32, 26 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hello, i would like to move this image on Commons, but screenshot with copyrighted content are not allowed in Commons. I would like to know if texture used are free ? and if no, do you think you can do the same picture with free content (i know FreeDoom replace all unfree content of Doom). Thanks a lot. fr:user:bayo 193.248.38.17 17:13, 30 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

I can do a free version, but not this instant. Fredrik Johansson 17:15, 30 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
Thanks a lot, i can wait :) I already move Commons:Image:Doom_mapformat_map.png on Commons. Another little thing, it will be nice to release another screenshot (of Image:Doom mapformat screen.png) without comment, because it's more easy to translate english image without alterating the picture. 193.248.38.17 17:18, 30 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

UK Roundabout

edit

An image you are listed as having worked on is up for delisting as a featured picture: Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates/UK Roundabout delist. The image creator is gore from Wikipedia, but you apparently made the most recent version. One of the main criticisms is that the frame rate of the animation is poor and that a higher frame rate at the expense of file size would be beneficial. Would you care to comment, or can you make an improved version? --Dgies 04:41, 4 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Graphics Lab

edit

I saw your name listed on Wikiproject Illustration or the list of graphic artists, and I thought I'd let you know that a Graphics Lab has been created on EN. Based on the highly successful French and German graphics labs, it seeks to better organise and coordinate our graphic design and photo-editing efforts. Up until now, there has been no common space on EN where users could ask for maps, charts and other SVG files to be created. What's more, the Graphics Lab has discussion boards, tips, tools and links; in sum, a good common workspace. Come help us out! The infrastucture is already in place, and now we need participants. :) --Zantastik talk 00:49, 12 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned fair use image (Image:Python-logo.png)

edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Python-logo.png. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Image tag for Ron Rivest

edit

Unspecified source for Image:Ron Rivest.jpg

edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Ron Rivest.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 11:33, 6 September 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. --Cbdorsett 11:33, 6 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Image question

edit

Dear Fredrik; you say you currently edit very little, but allow my to post at your talk page. If the deletion backlogs on Commons continue to drag on as they currently are, you should have at least 2 months to deal with the issue.

An image you uploaded and tagged as taken by your dad, never got tagged with a license. I added a license to it -- GFDL-presumed -- but now I demand to get it properly certified or deleted, and have nominated the image for deletion. If you wish to respond, please do so here: commons:Commons:Deletion_requests/Image:Björnskalletjärn.jpg. Truly yours, Fred-J 22:18, 26 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Replaceable fair use Image:Lars Hörmander 1988.jpg

edit

Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Lars Hörmander 1988.jpg. I noticed the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, fair use images which could be replaced by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if not used in an article), per our Fair Use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. —Remember the dot (talk) 03:59, 3 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Fair use rationale for Image:Troy-poster.jpg

edit

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Troy-poster.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. Orphaned non-free media (Image:Neil Young Neil Young album cover.jpg)

edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Neil Young Neil Young album cover.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. Replaceable fair use Image:Sandy Petersen.jpg

edit

Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Sandy Petersen.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, fair use media which could be replaced by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if not used in an article), per our Fair Use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. —Remember the dot (talk) 19:10, 29 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

BBP-like formulas I came up with

edit

Hi,

Few days ago I came up with this three symbol Pi BBP derivative formula

Maple Pi= 2/3 * (-1 + Sum(7/(4*k+1) - 6/(4*k+3) - 1/(4*k+5),k = 0 .. infinity)

PARI Pi= 2/3 * (-1 + suminf(k=0, 7/(4*k+1) - 6/(4*k+3) - 1/(4*k+5)))

Jon Borwein doesn't think that this result is "interesting" - see below (though his approach in getting my formula doesn't sound like exact science to me, since it requires for everyone to do what I did, that is to perform the "trial and error" search for the formula).

BTW, Jesus Guillera is not so *negative* in his formula assessment (see my Google chat with him further below). From: Jon Borwein Any rational has a BBP formula. If a, b have BBP formulas so does a+b. At the crudest level: find a formula for each number in base b and add them. Then use simplification tools to remove redundant terms. 12:46 PM me to Jesús Guillera : Nov 30 (2 days ago) Maple Pi= 2/3 * (-1 + Sum(7/(4*k+1) - 6/(4*k+3) - 1/(4*k+5),k = 0 .. infinity) Hi Jesus - is above easy to obtain ? Jesús Guillera to me 1:04 PM Jesús: Hi Alex, there is an easy proof of that formula if you convert it in an integral. For it, observe that... 1:07 PM int_(0,1) x ^ (4n+a) = 1 / (4n+a+1) 1:09 PM me: Thanks ! 1:10 PM Is it worth posting or it is so trivial ? 1:16 PM Jesús: The proof is easy but it can be interesting if one does not know the method. The formula converges slowly because there is not a factor like for example 1/16^k. Also for whatever it is worth, here is the alternative formula for ln(3) which I derived and which is not listed in http://www.mathworld.wolfram.com/BBP-TypeFormula.html ln(3) = 1/4*(1+ Sum((1/(9)^(k+1))*(27/(2*k+1) + 4/(2*k+2) + 1/(2*k+3)), k = 0 .. infinity) ) Apovolot (talk) 20:23, 1 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

4^x - x^4

edit

Hi Fredrik. Love the images! How did you create them? (I ask because I work in R and we have a similar functionality, but I never seem to manage to create such zingy graphics). Cheers, Robinh (talk) 20:19, 6 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

This was done with matplotlib, using the wrapper function cplot in mpmath.
from mpmath import *
cplot(lambda x: sign(4**x-x**4), [-20, 20], [-20, 20], points=50000)
Nothing particularly fancy about it; just sampling the function across a grid, mapping function values onto RGB, and displaying the image. I guess much of the zinginess (is that a word?) comes from the choice of color function. Fredrik Johansson 20:39, 6 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion of File:Painter's algorithm.psp.bz2

edit

A tag has been placed on File:Painter's algorithm.psp.bz2 requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section I10 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a file that is not an image, sound file or video clip [i.e. a Word document or PDF file] that has no encyclopedic use.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on [[ Talk:File:Painter's algorithm.psp.bz2|the talk page]] explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the article does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the article or have a copy emailed to you. Proposed deletion of Minako Hamano

edit

The article Minako Hamano has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

No interviews or biographies available to expand/source the article

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. File source problem with File:Mini Christmas tree.png

edit

Thank you for uploading File:Mini Christmas tree.png. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of that website's terms of use of its content. However, if the copyright holder is a party unaffiliated from the website's publisher, that copyright should also be acknowledged.

File source problem with File:Simple supply and demand color.png

edit

Thank you for uploading File:Simple supply and demand color.png.

Fair use rationale for File:Doom Bible map.png

edit

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Doom Bible map.png. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Notification: changes to "Mark my edits as minor by default" preference

edit

Hello there. This is an automated message to tell you about the gradual phasing out of the preference entitled "Mark all edits minor by default", which you currently have (or very recently had) enabled.

On 13 March 2011, this preference was hidden from the user preferences screen as part of efforts to prevent its accidental misuse (consensus discussion, guidelines for use at WP:MINOR). This had the effect of locking users in to their existing preference, which, in your case, was true. To complete the process, your preference will automatically be changed to false in the next few days. This does not require any intervention on your part and all users will still be able to manually mark their edits as being minor in the usual way.

For well-established users such as yourself there is a workaround available involving custom JavaScript. If you have any problems, feel free to drop me a note.

Thank you for your understanding and happy editing :) Editing on behalf of User:Jarry1250, LivingBot (talk) 20:23, 15 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

File:Mini Christmas tree.png missing description details

edit
Dear uploader: The media file you uploaded as File:Mini Christmas tree.png is missing a description and/or other details on its image description page. If possible, please add this information. This will help other editors to make better use of the image, and it will be more informative for readers.

If the information is not provided, the image may eventually be proposed for deletion, a situation which is not desirable, and which can easily be avoided.

If you have any questions please see Help:Image page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 16:49, 7 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned non-free image File:Super Metroid Mother Brain tank.png

edit

Thanks for uploading File:Super Metroid Mother Brain tank.png. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of "file" pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. File permission problem with File:Dave Taylor.jpg

edit

Thanks for uploading File:Dave Taylor.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read the Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Magog the Ogre (talk) 09:43, 6 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:The Doom Hacker's Guide cover.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Notice of change

edit

Hello. You are receiving this message because of a recent change to the administrator policy that alters what you were told at the time of your desysopping. The effect of the change is that if you are inactive for a continuous three year period, you will be unable to request return of the administrative user right. This includes inactive time prior to your desysopping if you were desysopped for inactivity and inactive time prior to the change in policy. Inactivity is defined as the absence of edits or logged actions. Until such time as you have been inactive for three years, you may request return of the tools at the bureaucrats' noticeboard. After you have been inactive for three years, you may seek return of the tools only through WP:RFA. Thank you. MBisanz talk 00:20, 4 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Holonomic function, you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages Hadamard product and Ideal (mathematics) (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

WP:VG Interview

edit

This hasn't hit the mainstream yet, but today is an important day for WP:VG. We've reached our 10 year anniversary! The WP:VG Newsletter crew are interested in running a feature this quarter on the early days of WP:VG and because you are one of the earliest contributors to the WikiProject, we need your help. In the last 10 years a lot has changed and we'd love to hear your perspective on it. One of the biggest changes may be your level of participation in the WikiProject or even in Wikipedia generally. This is why I'm contacting you almost 2 months before the newsletter is due to come out (it's due on April 2). I'm hoping that you'll have time somewhere between now and then to answer a few general questions reflecting on WP:VG and Wikipedia in general. Please contact me here if you would be willing to answer a few questions for our anniversary article. If you can participate, please mark this beside your name on the list, and if you can't participate please also mark this on the list by deleting your name or overstriking it. I hope this will be a fun and interesting quarter for the WP:VG Newsletter! Thanks in advance. -Thibbs (talk) 12:39, 6 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

Proposed deletion of The Roger Richman Agency

edit

The article The Roger Richman Agency has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

The coverage (references, external links, etc.) does not seem sufficient to justify this article passing Wikipedia:General notability guideline and the more detailed Wikipedia:Notability (companies) requirement. If you disagree and deprod this, please explain how it meets them on the talk page in the form of "This article meets criteria A and B because..." and ping me back. Thank you,

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.
