ArbCom 2017 election voter message

Hello, Helgi-S. Voting in the 2017 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 10 December. All users who registered an account before Saturday, 28 October 2017, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Wednesday, 1 November 2017 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

On William Lawes there was no link to Encyclopædia Britannica, just an inaccurate link to a blog.

What are you talking about? Check my edit again, please. I added link to britannica.com (via {{Britannica}} template). And I modified link to earlymusicworld.com (but you didn't remove this link). Helgi-S (talk) 13:18, 10 December 2017 (UTC)

Galileo Galilei

Hello, friend. I hope this message finds you well. I have been reading the article on Galileo, and seen some of the controversial aspects mentioned in it, like Galileo's religious beliefs. I do understand this is a spiky issue, but please let me make a suggestion. Usually it is believed that Galileo was a Christian, which is understandable, because he was raised as such. However, there are authors that point out that most likely that was not the truth. Would you consider adding info from the following articles to Galileo's article? We users with less than 500 edits are not allowed to to so.

Locked/paywalled articles on Encyclopaedia Britannica

Hi Helgi-S, I wanted to let you know that I reverted your edit to the Berlin article, because you added an external link that requires registration to read. That contradicts the External Links guideline; please see WP:LINKSTOAVOID point #6, and WP:ELREG. Such material that is "behind a paywall" is acceptable as a cited source in an article per WP:PAYWALL, but not as an external link.

Not all Encyclopaedia Britannica articles require registration to read, so those ones are acceptable as external links[edit: see below]. However, the rest, which are indicated with a padlock icon beside the article name, and the text "To continue reading, activate your free trial", are not. For example, the article on Kim Jong-Un can be read freely, so it's not a problem. But the article on Kim Jong Il requires a paid subscription to read, and is therefore not acceptable as an external link.

I would ask that you refrain from adding external links to paywalled articles in the future. I've deleted the links from the Berlin, Ho Chi Minh, and Kim Jong-il articles, and I would also ask that you remove any other paywalled external links you have previously added to other articles. I understand that may be a lot of work, sorry. If you have any questions, or think I've made a mistake, please let me know by replying here, thanks. --IamNotU (talk) 19:30, 10 September 2018 (UTC)

Fyi, I struck out some text above, because even the non-paywalled articles may not be appropriate as external links, per WP:LINKSTOAVOID point #1: "Any site that does not provide a unique resource beyond what the article would contain if it became a featured article. In other words, the site should not merely repeat information that is already or should be in the article. Links for future improvement of the page can be placed on the article's talk page." (emphasis mine). By definition, any information in the Encyclopedia Britannica article should be included in the Wikipedia article, for example by paraphrasing and citing it. This is perhaps a bit more debatable than paywalled material which is without question unsuitable as an external link. I'll look into it further, in the meantime I thought I should let you know. --IamNotU (talk) 02:07, 12 September 2018 (UTC)
