Undoing redirect

Hi Ks0stm. Just as a courtesy note, I have undone the soft redirect you added to Access Denied's talk page; my reasoning is here. Thanks, 28bytes (talk) 15:24, 13 January 2011 (UTC)

Fine by me...my original opinion was more along the lines of your's, I was just putting in the soft redirect with content as a compromise between not redirecting at all and completely redirecting. Ks0stm (T) 18:00, 13 January 2011 (UTC)
I always applaud the desire to compromise. :) 28bytes (talk) 18:11, 13 January 2011 (UTC)

Help with Article: Manhattan GMAT

Hello Ks0stm. About a month ago you looked over my article on ManhattanGMAT and gave me your feedback. I wanted to thank you for your help. With your help and the help of others, my article got created!

However, I was hoping for your help one more time. A user named Bongomatic has flagged the article for lacking notability. Mono (who created the article after it passed AFC) tried to remove the tag and support the notability of the page, but Bongomatic said that it still didn't pass muster. I know that Bongomatic was involved in the a deletion debate about the last incarnation of the ManhattanGMAT article and I am worried that he might be predisposed to oppose the article due to things that occurred in the last deletion debates (I wasn't involved then and don't know exactly what went on).

I was hoping you could vouch for the good faith with which this article has been recreated. I believe that I have certainly proven notability and made a worthy article (as you noted when you were working with me to build the article). I really worked hard on the article and tried to include as many devoted Wikipedia editors as possible along the way so that I took every step to promote the article fairly. If you could provide any direction on what steps I can take to prevent the article from being flagged for notability concerns, I would be very grateful. Thank you for your help! ImTheBombardier (talk) 18:13, 21 January 2011 (UTC)

I just want you to know that I have read your request and will look into it as soon as I have enough time...it's late where I'm located (~23:00) and I have a rather busy weekend planned. If I have time, I will look into it this weekend, but if not I'll for sure get to it Monday during school. Ks0stm (T) 05:10, 22 January 2011 (UTC)
Thank you. There is no rush, so don't feel like you need to get to it this weekend if you don't have time. I appreciate the help and I look forward to your feedback!ImTheBombardier (talk) 23:20, 22 January 2011 (UTC)
I removed it for now...I have a feeling it might end up getting re-added, unfortunately, and at that time I will have to discuss it probably in a bit of depth...but if it gets readded I will also ask for assistance and advice from people in the IRC help channel, since they seem to be good at things like that. At this point, all that can be done is to sit back and see if it gets re-added. Ks0stm (T) 01:40, 25 January 2011 (UTC)
Thank you for your help. If it does get re-added I will ask around for advice on how to proceed. I really feel that the article holds up in terms of notability. I read the notability guidelines thoroughly throughout my editing process and feel that it meets all of the points brought up in those guidelines. Thanks again for your assistance. If you think a page should be deleted, the appropriate course is Articles for Deletion. If you think a page is incorrect or inappropriate, you can either raise the concerns on the talk page of the article, the talk page for the article's primary contributor, or with an editor like myself. What's the page and I can have a look at it? Ks0stm (T) 17:00, 27 January 2011 (UTC)

Wikipedia Ambassador Program is looking for new Online Ambassadors

Hi! Since you've been identified as an Awesome Wikipedian, I wanted to let you know about the Wikipedia Ambassador Program, and specifically the role of Online Ambassador. We're looking for friendly Wikipedians who are good at reviewing articles and giving feedback to serve as mentors for students who are assigned to write for Wikipedia in their classes.

If that sounds like you and you're interested, I encourage you to take a look at the Online Ambassador guidelines; the "mentorship process" describes roughly what will be expected of mentors during the current term, which started in January and goes through early May. If that's something you want to do, please apply!

You can find instructions for applying at WP:ONLINE. The main things we're looking for in Online Ambassadors are friendliness, regular activity (since mentorship is a commitment that spans several months), and the ability to give detailed, substantive feedback on articles (both short new articles, and longer, more mature ones).

I hope to hear from you soon.--Sage Ross - Online Facilitator, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 17:01, 2 February 2011 (UTC)

Nonsense edit to my talk page

This illustrates why I am not a fan of automated tools. ~Amatulić (talk) 18:23, 14 February 2011 (UTC)

That would be my bad; I didn't think of the fact that the first contributor to the page might be someone other than the user engaging in promotion. Sorry about that! Ks0stm (T) 18:25, 14 February 2011 (UTC)
Not a problem. In my experience, often the first contributor to any non-serious editor's talk page is from someone other than the user, usually to post a warning or notice.
The odd thing is, I had already indef blocked this user earlier. Looks like he replaced the block notice on his talk page with more promotional material. He has now been blocked so that he can't edit his own talk page. ~Amatulić (talk) 18:33, 14 February 2011 (UTC)

Hastings Museum

Thank you for your help on this post, the addtions are awesome. I have some photos, one at Wikimedia listed as Hastings Museum and there are others here: https://picasaweb.google.com/hastingsmuseum/HastingsMuseumOfNaturalAndCulturalHistory#

Not sure what you're able to use (ruleswise), but the one on Wikimedia is a photo that belonged to me.Exhibits222 (talk) 19:24, 23 February 2011 (UTC)

Well, yes, the references are coming along nicely for verifying the information in the article...however, I need reliable third-party references if I am to prove notability to the museum (a criteria that has to be met or else the article would risk being deleted again via WP:AfD). Are there any sources of information that are not related to the museum or the City of Hastings detailing exhibits and characteristics in the article (say perhaps newspaper or magazine articles that can be retrieved via internet)? Ks0stm (T) 20:10, 23 February 2011 (UTC)

I posted a Magazine ref on the sandbox page / obviously I'm still learning (frustrating). The article is not online but I can scan and email it to you. I'm not sure about making a pdf and posting that here, not sure how??Exhibits222 (talk) 14:24, 25 February 2011 (UTC)

2010 Census Changes For Cities

I decided to write up a quick article to guide other authors on updating the 2010 Census for city articles in Kansas. This is the approach that I'm going to take for modifying articles. This is considered a live user article, so likely I will change it as I find errors and get feedback. Obviously, everyone can do whatever they want, but hopefully they will take my changes into account.

Question on editing

Hello, Ks0stm. You have new messages at TornadoLGS's talk page.
You can remove this notice at any time by removing the {{Talkback}} or {{Tb}} template.

You said to ask If I have any questions. I have come across something the article List of United States tornadoes in June 2010 in which one of the tornadoes is listed under an incorrect rating. Should I just change it then? I believe have an adequate source to cite, but I do not want to get in trouble if the person who originally entered the date should find my edit to be incorrect. Also. If I am just changing the listed rating of a tornado (EF1 to EF0), is that a minor edit? TornadoLGS (talk) 01:27, 11 March 2011 (UTC)

Well, if I were you I would check the tornado against the NCDC Storm Events Database (it appears to be down right now but should be up and running soon), which is basically the official source for storm events. Just search by state and date, and if you find the tornado has a different rating in the database than in the article, feel free to change it. If it matches what is in the article, I would recommend against changing it because the source you have might have been preliminary in nature. Also, if it is incorrect according to the database, feel free to change it; you won't get in trouble with the person who added it so long as you say in your edit summary you are changing it per the database. Also, it would be helpful to me if you could point out this tornado, because it is possible that others from the same event might have incorrect ratings as well...what day, time, and state did this tornado occur according to the Wikipedia article?
By the way, welcome to Wikipedia! You might want to check out WikiProject Severe Weather, WikiProject Tropical Cyclones, and WikiProject Meteorology and Weather Events for more ways to get involved. Ks0stm (T) 16:43, 11 March 2011 (UTC)

The tornado in question struck Presque Isle, State Park on June 27, 2010 The database confirms it as an EF0, rather than an EF1 as the article lists. Other records appear to be accurate. TornadoLGS (talk) 22:19, 11 March 2011 (UTC)

WikiProject United States Government

Greetings. I noticed that you are one of the few members of WikiProject United States Government that are still active so I wanted to ask you a question. It appears that this project is mostly inactive aside from what the members might be doing independently. I was considering suggesting that this project be pulled in under WikiProject United States and wanted to solicit comments from some of this projects members before doing so. As with Washington DC and the others the project would for the most part maintain its own independence but I believe this would benefit both projects. What do you think about this? --Kumioko (talk) 00:54, 23 March 2011 (UTC)

To be honest, either way it doesn't really matter to me given that I'm mostly only in the project for National Weather Service related articles (i.e. Storm Prediction Center, National Weather Service Wichita, Kansas, etc.). Whatever works best for the project as a whole I'll go with. Ks0stm (T) 03:12, 23 March 2011 (UTC)
Ok thanks good to know. Just wondering since I don't deal with them much but are there many articles relating to the National Weather service? --Kumioko (talk) 03:16, 23 March 2011 (UTC)
Category:National Weather Service and Category:National Weather Service Forecast Offices contain most of our related articles at the moment...all in all, there are at least 122 forecast offices, 21 Center Weather Service Units, 13 River Forecast Centers, 8 National Centers for Environmental Prediction, the CPHC, WCATWC, PTWC, NSSL, NCDC, and the WDTB that could have articles...however, at present, there are only 13 forecast office articles, no CWSU articles, and no river forecast center articles. Six of the eight NCEP offices have articles, and all the rest I listed have articles...however, many aren't exactly of the highest quality out there. In short, it's an area that still needs a hefty amount of development. Ks0stm (T) 04:10, 23 March 2011 (UTC)
Ok thanks. --Kumioko (talk) 11:17, 23 March 2011 (UTC)

March outbreak

It is definitely not warranted. It is barely even an outbreak. March 5-6 and February 27-28 would warrant an article much sooner than this event. CrazyC83 (talk) 04:31, 24 March 2011 (UTC)

Should we keep the page as a redirect to the section in Tornadoes of 2011 or would it be better nominated for deletion? Ks0stm (T) 04:33, 24 March 2011 (UTC)
Redirect would be better IMO. CrazyC83 (talk) 04:42, 24 March 2011 (UTC)

Domain Names are NOT case-sensitive

Internet domain names and email addresses are NOT case sensitive. See Domain_name#Domain_name_confusion. I always laugh when people demand that they MUST be lower-case. I noticed that you changed the Salina, Kansas domain name back to lower-case which really doesn't matter to me, since they have so many periods in their name. For longer domain names, I prefer to convert them to mixed case to make it easier to remember the domain name. See Cherokee County, Kansas for example. I have changed the case of hundreds of cities/counties to make them easier to read in their infobox. • SbmeirowTalk19:22, 1 April 2011 (UTC)

Re: April 25–28, 2011 tornado outbreak

I can try, but I have to take shelter soon, two tornadic storms heading right at me. Thrilling and scary at the same time for here in NY. Cyclonebiskit (talk) 16:13, 28 April 2011 (UTC)

Well, they seem to have calmed down below tornadic levels (no more TORs)...but the article just went up on the main page so it'll need knowledgeable eyes as much as possible to keep an eye out for sneaky vandalism and insertion of incorrect information. Ks0stm (T) 16:30, 28 April 2011 (UTC)

Re: Images

Yeah. Would have been nice if I had actually CAUGHT a tornado on either of my chases Monday or Tuesday. I was within 10 minutes of at least 3 tornadoes in two days, but all I got were empty wall clouds.

I'm sure it won't be a problem once the surveys start and things quiet down: NWS people will post images for SURE. I just wanted to get SOMETHING up there so the article wasn't just a block of text. -RunningOnBrains(talk) 17:12, 28 April 2011 (UTC)

Re: April 25–28, 2011 tornado outbreak

The table previously showed an F5, which is what much of the media have been saying, based on the amount and type of damage. It seems to have been reverted, based on no final assessment yet from the NWS. Fair enough. (And personally grateful that we had only four small tornadoes in my own vicinity, all of them in farmland. For this storm system, I am happy to have gotten off so lightly. You are obviously safe, having posted here now. I hope your friends and family are as well.) - Tenebris —Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.254.157.141 (talk) 17:30, 28 April 2011 (UTC)

Trouble might be brewing

As I say time and time again, I'm way too busy for this crap, so I probably have to go back to not editing for a while (yeah, we'll see how long that lasts haha). But before I go, could you keep an eye on List of tornadoes causing 100 or more deaths; there's a trouble-maker editing it who doesn't understand the difference between a tornado and a tornado outbreak, and keeps trying to add the most recent outbreak to the list. Thanks in advance, and for all your work on Wikipedia! -RunningOnBrains(talk) 08:30, 30 April 2011 (UTC)

Sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you; I just had a very busy weekend. I should he able to look after that article as soon as I get my laptop back from the repair shop; which should be today. I've actually been mostly confined to editing from iPod the last week outside of school, but with that coming to a close I will find it much easier to maintain watch over it outside school hours.
