From Ancient Greek ἀετός (aetós, “eagle”) + χθόνιος (khthónios, “buried, underworld”) + -ος (-os). Literally, “eagle killer”. From a species of it, Aetokthonos hydrillicola, being identified as the source of a toxin, aetokthonotoxin, killing eagles.
