editEtymology
editFrom Proto-Indo-European *h₂énh₁mos (“breath; spirit”), from *h₂enh₁- (“to breathe”) + *-mos (an animate abstract noun suffix) (the latter equivalent to *-mos). Formally cognate with Proto-Italic *anamos (“breath; wind; spirit, soul”); compare also Proto-Celtic *anaman (“spirit, soul”) and Proto-Tocharian *āñcäme (“soul; self”).[1]
