From Proto-Balto-Slavic *kaineitei. Morphologically from *cěna + *-iti. Cognate with Latvian cienīt (“to respect”) (from cieņa (“respect”). The similar cena (“price”) is a Slavic borrowing), Lithuanian káininti (“to price, value”) (from kaina).
