From Latin (nōmen) adiectīvum, from adiectīvus (adjective), from adiciō +‎ -īvus (to attach). The Latin term is a loan translation of Greek (ὄνομα) ἐπίθετον ((ónoma) epítheton), from ἐπίθετος (epíthetos, added). The Danish term tillægsord is a calque of the Latin and Greek words.
