editFrom af (“away from”) + got (“god”), from Proto-West Germanic *ab and Proto-West Germanic *god respectively. Possibly a calque of Gothic 𐌰𐍆𐌲𐌿𐌸𐍃 (afguþs). Compare Old High German abgot, Old Frisian afgod.
