Etymology

First attested in 1395. From Old Hungarian agar and earlier Agar [1193]. Borrowed from a West Slavic language; compare Czech ohař, Polish ogar and Slovak ohar, from Proto-Slavic *ogarь. Or less likely directly borrowed from a (Oghuric) Turkic language.
