bedauern
German
editEtymology
editFrom Middle High German betūren (also betiuren), a prefixation of tūren (“to consider grave”). Equivalent to modern be- + dauern (etymology 2), the simplex of which is now archaic. Pertaining to teuer (“dear, expensive”). The modern consonantism is Central and Low German (compare Middle Low German dūren).
