demek takes a literal sentence as its compliment, contrasting with söylemek, which takes a subordinate clause. Compare,

  • Ahmet, ödevini yaptığını söyledi
  • Ahmet, "ödevimi yaptım" dedi

both of which mean "Ahmet said that he has done his homework".
