Etymology
editFrom Ancient Greek ἰῶτα (iôta, “the letter Ι”).

editjoto (accusative singular joton, plural jotoj, accusative plural jotojn)
Spanish
editEtymology
editUnknown, maybe from choto; also proposed from jota, Spanish name of letter j, because of mocking, festive aspect of the joker card figure applied to some gay males. Another version is that gay and queer men were held in the J bay of the Lecumberri prison in Mexico City (J is pronounced "jota" in Spanish).[1]

editNoun
editjoto m (plural jotos)
- (vulgar, derogatory, Mexico, Honduras) gay (male homosexual)

- Synonym: comodín
- (card games, by extension) jack
