karvas
Finnish
editPronunciation
editEtymology 1
editFrom Proto-Finnic *karvas, probably borrowed from Proto-Germanic *harwaz (compare Middle High German hare, German herb)[1] or (less likely) derived from Proto-Uralic *karwa. Finnic cognates include Livonian kōraz. If the word is Uralic, other cognates include Udmurt курыт (kuryt), Komi-Permyak курыт (kuryt), Komi-Zyrian курыд (kuryd), and Eastern Khanty корәг (korəg).
Adjective
editkarvas (comparative karvaampi, superlative karvain)
- bitter (having an acrid taste)
- (figuratively) bitter, stinging (leaving someone feeling bitter or disappointed)
- Synonym: katkera
- karvas tappio ― a bitter defeat
Usage notes
editIn the literal sense, used of "bitter" as one of the conventional primary or basic flavours. In the figurative sense, used of events or experiences, not of persons. The synonym katkera is used both of persons and events.
