From Malay keraton, from Classical Malay keraton, from Javanese kraton (ꦏꦿꦠꦺꦴꦤ꧀ (kingship; palace), royal palace, kingdom), karaton (ꦏꦫꦠꦺꦴꦤ꧀, royal palace, court), from Old Javanese karatun (kingship, royal dignity). Reconstructed as ratu +‎ ke- -an. Doublet of kedatuan and kedaton.
