From Proto-Polynesian *kofu from Proto-Oceanic *kofu₂ or *koput (“low cloud, mist, fog” – compare with Hawaiian ʻohu, Tahitian ʻohu, Tongan kohu)[1] from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *kabut (“mist” – compare with Malay kabut).[2][3]
