From Arabic مِسْكِين (miskīn), borrowed from Classical Syriac ܡܶܣܟܸܐܢܳܐ / ܡܶܣܟܸܢܳܐ / ܡܶܣܟܸܝܢܳܐ (meskēnā, miserable, wretched), from Akkadian 𒈦𒆕𒂗 (muškēnum, commoner, poor).
