Etymology

edit

From Proto-Finno-Ugric *ńuŋɜ- (to rest, relax)[1][2] + -szik. The nyug- (to keep quiet) stem was revived during the Hungarian language reform in the 18th–19th centuries and used in several compound words. See nyugágy (deckchair), nyugdíj (pension).[3] Cognate with Erzya нувсемс (nuvśems, to doze, drowse).
