Inherited from Latin tata, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *tatás. Compare Aromanian tatã, Dalmatian tuota (“father”), Neapolitan tata (“father”); cf. also Albanian tatë. It was possibly reinforced by the similar South Slavic term (e.g. Serbo-Croatian tata (“dad”)).
