editEtymology
editFrom Middle Vietnamese 𠨡 (tlứng), from Proto-Vietic *k-ləːŋʔ (“egg”). Cognate with Muong tlởng, Tho [Cuối Chăm] kləːŋ³.
This term appears to be the original word for "egg" within Vietic. In the (usually more) archaic Vietic languages, it was displaced by *t-luːrʔ (> Arem ulʊːlʔ, Thavung ตะลู้น), which is an Austronesian loan (cf. Malay telur).
Similarity to Proto-Khmuic *kʔloŋ (“egg”), whence Puoc kloŋ and Khmu [Cuang] kdoŋ, is probably coincidental, since it involved both an irregular vowel correspondence and metathesis of the glottal stop.
