Etymology

edit

From Old French verdir (12th c.), possibly inherited from Vulgar Latin *vir(i)dire, an alteration of Classical Latin viridēscere. Compare Italian inverdire, archaic Spanish enverdir (alongside enverdecer), Romanian înverzi. Equivalent to vert +‎ -ir (the -t in vert being due to final devoicing).
