Sall Grover
NationalityAustralian
Alma materBond University
Occupation(s)Journalist, writer, app developer
Known forGiggle, a women's only social media app

Sall Grover is an Australian businesswoman and the founder of Giggle,[1] a social media app designed for women. The app gained notability following a legal challenge concerning the legality of the app's membership policies restricting access to cisgender women only.[2][3][4] Prior to this endeavour, Grover worked in the American film industry as a scriptwriter.[5]

Education and early career

Grover grew up on the Gold Coast, Queensland and studied journalism and philosophy at Bond University. She initially worked as an entertainment journalist—first in Australia, then the UK—before moving to Los Angeles to begin work as a screenwriter. There she teamed up with Emma Jensen, a fellow Australian expat, to publish a novel The LA Team.[6]

Giggle app

In 2020, Grover founded Giggle for Girls, a mobile app for cisgender women only.[7][8] The name, Giggle, is the collective noun for women.[9] The app is described as catering to adult women, offering a safe online space for them to connect and find support in various areas such as finding roommates, freelancing, emotional support, and activism.[9][10] Grover has said she was driven to develop a women's only digital platform by her desire to guard against the advances of predatory men, a view that was informed by her experience with misogyny and sexual violence.[11][12] To verify users, the app relied on technology developed by Kairos, a company that offers facial recognition software.[11][13] The app reportedly had 20,000 users before being closed in 2022.[14] Grover has alleged that transgender activists have sent numerous rape threats and death threats in relation to the app's membership policy.[15]

Grover's efforts to create a digital women-only space that excluded transgender women led to the app being criticised by transgender activists and led to legal proceedings to determine the legality of the membership policies used on the platform.[16][17] The case, dubbed Tickle v Giggle,[14] was brought to the Federal Circuit Court following a complaint raised by Roxanne Tickle, a transgender woman who was denied membership of the site, to the Australian Human Rights Commission.[18] The case was dropped in July of 2022 but subsequently reopened in 2023.[19][10][20] Tickle was granted $50,000 from Grata Fund, a charity associated with University of New South Wales, to cover legal costs.[21] The four day hearing began on 9 April 2024.[22]

Support

Groups supporting Grover's position include LGB Alliance Australia,[23] Women's Forum Australia,[24] Coalition of Activist Lesbians (CoAL),[25] and Australian Feminists for Women's Rights.[26] Grover's initial cause and later case has similarly been reviewed by Meghan Murphy's Feminist Current,[27] FiLiA,[28] Women's Declaration International (WDI),[29] and Cambridge Radical Feminists Network.[30]

Personal life

Grover lives on the Gold Coast in Queensland where she raises a daughter.[8][9] in 2022, following her giving birth, Grover raised the issue concerning the use of gender neutral language in Medicare forms (swapping a field for "mother's name" to "birthing parent") which had been part of a trial used in three hospitals. As a result, Bill Shorten, Minister for Government Services, reversed the naming policy to its previous position.[31][32][33]
