Cannon Blake Hinnant was a five-year-old American boy from Wilson, North Carolina. At 5:30 pm on August 9, 2020, he bicycled onto his next-door neighbor's property, and the neighbor, Darius Sessoms, a 25-year-old man, allegedly shot the boy at point-blank range.[2] At the time, Hinnant was playing outside with his two older sisters. He was taken to Wilson Medical Center where he died from his injuries.[3] The motive for the shooting seemingly relates to Black Supremacy.[2] Sessoms was arrested and subsequently charged with first-degree murder.[4][5] Hinnant's funeral was held on August 13, 2020.[6]

There were claims circulated on politically conservative social media that mainstream news outlets other than Fox News were not reporting about the story because they did not want to report about a black man killing a white child. However, according to Snopes, there had been coverage of the killing and there was no evidence of a cover-up.[7]

A GoFundMe page was created by Hinnant's grandmother with a goal of raising $5,000 for the family to seek justice for the boy's killing, and by August 19 it had raised over $766,000.[8]

On September 22, Aolani Takemi Marie Pettit, 21, of Wilson was also arrested in connection with the case. She was charged with felony accessory after the fact.[9]

Victim

Cannon Hinnant was born on 30 April 2015[10] to Austin and Bonny Hinnant. He had two siblings. Hinnant's parents divorced in 2019 and he spent weekends at his father's house.[11]

Memorials

On 14 August 2020, a large street memorial in honour of Hinnant was painted by Skeeter Tulloch, from Lee County. It read: "Cannon's Life Matters".[12]

On 23 August, hundreds of bikers and community members gathered in Kenly, North Carolina to honour Hinnant. Participants at the event wore shirts reading "I Can't Ride / All Lives Matter". An all day softball event was also held the previous day, raising funds to obtain justice for Hinnant.[13]
