Vassily Sinaisky

Vassily Serafimovich Sinaisky (Russian: Васи́лий Серафи́мович Сина́йский, born in the Russian Komi Republic, April 20, 1947) is a Russian conductor and pianist. He studied conducting with Ilya Musin at the Leningrad Conservatory and began his career as Assistant to Kirill Kondrashin at the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra.[1] In 1973 he won the Gold Medal at the Karajan Competition in Berlin.[1]

Sinaisky was Chief Conductor of the Latvian Symphony Orchestra (1976-87)[1], then became Music Director and Principal Conductor of the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra from 1991 to 1996. He has also held the post of Principal Guest Conductor of the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra. He also served as Music Director of the Russian State Orchestra (formerly Evgeny Svetlanov’s USSR State Symphony Orchestra), a position he held until 2002, and was principal guest conductor with the Bolshoi Theatre.

Sinaisky has been Principal Guest Conductor of the BBC Philharmonic since 1996, and is a regular visitor to The Proms. Sinaisky has made several recordings with the BBC Philharmonic for Chandos, including works by Karol Szymanowski, Rodion Shchedrin, Mily Balakirev, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov,[2] and Franz Schreker,[3] as well as a series of recordings of Shostakovich's film music. In January 2012, Sinaisky is expected to relinquish the principal guest conductorship of the BBC Philharmonic and to take the new title of conductor emeritus.[4].

Since January 2007, Sinaisky has been the principal conductor of the Malmö Symphony Orchestra. With the Malmö orchestra, he has conducted commercial recordings for the Naxos label, including music of Franz Schmidt.[5][6]

In September 2010 he was appointed artistic director of the Bolshoi Theatre.[7]
