Sir Anthony Bailey (born 13 January 1970), KGCN, OBE, GCNG, GCSS, KC*HS, ComIH, is a royal, diplomatic, and public affairs consultant, and an international relations and charities campaigner.

In 2009 Bailey was placed in 68th position in the British edition of GQ magazine's "100 Most Powerful List". The Observer referred to Bailey as a "PR Guru who is one of the most influential men you have never heard of" and "a key player in the world of Catholic and Middle East politics."[1]

Personal life

Bailey was born in London on 13 January 1970 to an Irish mother and British father. In 1991, he graduated from the School of Slavonic and East European Studies, part of University College London, in Contemporary Central and East European Studies. He later studied at Corvinus University of Budapest in Hungary, as well as at Sofia University and Veliko Tarnovo University in Bulgaria.[citation needed]

On 27 October 2007, in a ceremony held in Salzburg, Austria[2] (previously on 29 September 2007 in a civil ceremony at Pena Palace in Sintra, Portugal), Bailey married Princess Marie-Therese of Hohenberg, a member of the Austrian Ducal House of Hohenberg. Among the couple's witnesses at the three-day wedding celebrations held in Salzburg, participants included Prince Konstantin-Assen of Bulgaria, Lord Nicholas Windsor, Duchess Fleur of Württemberg and Baroness Scotland of Asthal.[3] Their first child, Maximilian, was born in March 2010.[4]

Public relations

Bailey is chairman of Anthony Bailey Consulting, a public affairs company. Previous positions include chairman of Eligo International, management communications for IBM EMEA based in Paris, and senior account director for communications firm Burson-Marsteller.[citation needed]

Bailey is a member of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (MCIPR) since 1997,[5] and of the International Public Relations Association (MIPRA) since 1996.

Bailey serves on boards and as a special adviser including to Vitrociset in Italy and TIMWE in Portugal. He has previously worked as a consultant to the chairmen of Shell and BAE Systems.[6]

Education

Since 2002, Bailey has been an adviser on education to the Department for Education.[7] He also holds directorships with several educational trusts and charities including the United Learning Trust [8] which runs the largest group of academy schools in Britain, the Archdiocese of Westminster [9] and St Mary's University [9] in Twickenham. Bailey raised over £8 million to fund the Academy schools programme.[10]

Interfaith dialogue

Bailey is an inter-faith campaigner engaged in faith-based charities, including in recent years the Three Faiths Forum, Faiths Forum for London,[11] the Forthspring Inter-Community Group in Belfast, the Catholic Union of Great Britain and the Association of Papal Orders in Britain and in Ireland. In 2009 Bailey was appointed magistral delegate of the charitable Sacred Military Constantinian Order of St George.[12] He has organised interfaith conferences across Europe, the Caribbean and the Middle East attended by Christian, Muslim and Jewish leaders.

In 2012 Bailey was awarded the Sternberg Interfaith Gold Medallion by Jewish interfaith leader Sir Sigmund Sternberg, "in recognition of Anthony Bailey's many years of endeavour and exceptional contribution to the improvement of understanding between the faiths in Britain and across the world."[13]

Diplomacy and charities

Bailey was appointed in 1999 as executive chairman of Painting & Patronage[7] by Prince Khalid Al-Faisal of Saudi Arabia – currently Governor of Makkah Region. Painting & Patronage is a cultural, artistic and educational project between Saudi Arabia and Europe including exchanges under the joint patronage of the Prince of Wales, President Jorge Sampaio of Portugal and President Filip Vujanović of Montenegro.[14] Bailey holds positions with other organisations and charities aimed at promoting European-Arab relations including the Moroccan-British Society and the Anglo-Arab Organisation.

Bailey is the former chief policy adviser of the Foreign Policy Centre.[15] He is a director of the Waterford Museum of Treasures and a member of the court of the guild of Freemen of the City of London.[16]

In 2009 Bailey was appointed special envoy of the President of Montenegro to the Middle East and North Africa and has been responsible for organising the official visits of the President to the region including Saudi Arabia in 2010 and Jordan in 2013.[17]

Bailey is engaged in charitable and cultural initiatives in the Caribbean for many years. In 2014 it was reported that Bailey was leading a multi-million pound charitable engagement in St Kitts and Nevis, Antigua & Barbuda,[18] Dominica[19] and St Lucia,[20] for the Constantinian Order, which include the restoration of three cathedrals in Castries, Roseau and St John's, building a school, an old people's home, a youth centre and community outreach centre.

In 2014 Bailey was appointed by the Governor General of Antigua and Barbuda as a member of the Government House Restoration Committee [21] and in 2015 was appointed by the Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda as the Special Economic Envoy of Antigua and Barbuda to the states of the European Union. In 2015 he was appointed Ambassador of St Kitts and Nevis, having served the country's prime minister as international adviser.

In 2015 Bailey was appointed by the Governor General of Grenada to the Government House Restoration Committee which works to rebuild and restore the country's infrastructure destroyed by Hurricane Ivan.[citation needed]

Bailey is Co-president of British Influence and a supporter of Britain's membership of the European Union and the Commonwealth.[22] He was a supporter of the Conservative Party until 1999 [6] from which time he aligned himself with the Labour Party including making a substantial donation to the failed leadership campaign of David Miliband in 2010.[6] There are no records at the Electoral Commission of Bailey supporting any political parties in the UK since that time.[citation needed]

Between 1988 - 1997 Bailey was a contributor to newspapers and magazines in the UK, France and Spain, including Hello!, Point de Vue, Royalty Magazine, Evening Standard and Marie-Claire, included feature interviews with senior national and international figures.
