Asia's Next Top Model (abbreviated as "AsNTM") is a reality television show, based on the American franchise America's Next Top Model, in which a number of aspiring models compete for the title of Asia's Next Top Model and a chance to start their career in the modeling industry. The show features models from the entire Far East region, including South Asia.

An extensive online search takes place for the selection process. Models of Asian descent are encouraged to apply, but are required to speak and write in perfect English. All applicants are required to be at least 16 and no older than 27 years of age, and at least 5 ft 7 in (1.70 m) tall. Contestants who have previously participated in another Top Model franchise can still apply for the competition as long as they were not the winner, and are not currently under contractual obligations endorsing any product or brand.

For the first cycle, Vietnam's Next Top Model was appointed for scouting aspiring models throughout Vietnam. Trang Nguyen, who placed fourth on the second cycle of the show, made it into the final round and represented Vietnam in the main competition.[2] Mai Ngo, a finalist from the fourth cycle, is currently participating on the fourth cycle of Asia's Next Top Model.

Judges

For the fourth season, Thai fashion model and beauty queen Cindy Bishop replaced Georgina Wilson as host and head judge of the show. Indonesian model Kelly Tandiono and former America's Next Top Model creative consultant Yu Tsai, together with Bishop, make up the all-new judging panel for the fourth season.

Previous judges of the show include photographers Todd Anthony Tyler (cycle 1) and Mike Rosenthal (cycles 2-3), creative director Daniel Boey (cycle 1) and fashion designer Alex Perry (cycle 3), model mentor Joey Mead King (cycle 1-3) and catwalk coach Adam Williams (cycle 2), and head judge Nadya Hutagalung (cycle 1-2).

Differences from the American version

There are a few key differences between Asia's Next Top Model and America's Next Top Model. While the height standards are the same as the American version,[3] they aren't as heavily enforced, as some girls have been allowed to enter despite being slightly under the cut-off.[4][5][6][7] There is also the introduction of a 'mentor' for the girls, Joey Mead King (cycles 1-3) and Kelly Tandiono (cycle 4), who helps coach the girls in various aspects of the modelling industry and acts as a general assistant to the girls during the photo shoots and challenges.

Controversy

Ice-TV

According to some crew members and judges, such as Daniel Boey, Ice-TV did not pay them for their work on the show. Many crew members stated that they were not hired to work on a second cycle. Ice-TV stated that they were not able to hire them due to a withdrawal from two European sponsors.[8] Daniel Boey explained that this was the reason for his departure from the show. Ice-TV was replaced by activeTV as the production company for the show's second cycle.

Omitted episode

Cycle 2's eleventh episode featured the remaining five contestants, (Jodilly Pendre, Katarina Rodriguez, Marie Nakagawa, Nicole Lee and Sheena Liam) participating in a photo shoot for Malaysia Airlines.[9] After the show took two weeks off to prolong the gap between the Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 incident and the airing of the episode, the producers of the show decided to omit the episode entirely to respect those affected by the tragedy.[10] The season picked up again with the following episode, the beginning of which featured the events of the previous episode, revealing that Lee had been eliminated.[11][12] The omitted episode was later broadcast one month after the season ended, on May 8, 2014, during a re-run in Indonesia.
