Edward J. Ruppelt (1922 - 1959) was a United States Air Force officer probably best-known for his involvment Project Blue Book, a formal governmetnal study of Unidentified flying objects.

He is generally credited with coining the term "unidentified flying object".

1956 saw the publication of Ruppelt's The Report on Unidentified Flying Objects, a book he characterised as "the first time that anyone, either military or civilian, has brought together in one document all the facts about this fascinating subject."[1]
