Fifty Shades of Black is a 2016 American comedy film directed by Michael Tiddes and starring Marlon Wayans, who also co-wrote and co-produced the film. The film is a parody of the 2015 erotic romantic drama film Fifty Shades of Grey, and was released theatrically on January 29, 2016.

Plot

A young student goes to interview a wealthy, handsome businessman for her college newspaper and becomes drawn in to a decidedly kinky relationship. Yes, that's the plot of last year's most controversial movie, Fifty Shades of Grey. This wickedly funny spoof takes the same story and sends up all of its most famous scenes. Marlon Wayans, who also starred in and co-wrote director Michael Tiddes' rib-tickling Paranormal Activity send-up A Haunted House, plays controlling tycoon Christian Black. Kali Hawk is the innocent Hannah Steele. Watch out too for veterans Fred Willard and Jane Seymour joining in the hilarity as Christian's adoptive parents. And the film doesn't just have Fifty Shades in its zany scattershot comedy sights. The likes of Magic Mike, Zero Dark Thirty and Whiplash are also on the receiving end.

Reception

Box office

Fifty Shades of Black has grossed $11.5 million in North America and $6.6 million in other territories for a worldwide total of $18.1 million, against a budget of $5 million.[3]

The film was released in North America on January 29, 2016, alongside Kung Fu Panda 3, The Finest Hours, and Jane Got a Gun. The film was projected to gross $10–11 million from 2,075 theaters in its opening weekend.[11] The film grossed $275,000 from its Thursday night previews, $2.3 million on its first day, and $5.9 million in its opening weekend, finishing 10th at the box office.[12]

Critical response

On Rotten Tomatoes the film has a rating of 8%, based on 40 reviews, with an average rating of 2.8/10. The site's consensus reads, "Wildly erratic even for a spoof movie, Fifty Shades of Black bears the unfortunate distinction of offering fewer laughs than the unintentionally funny film it's trying to lampoon."[13] On Metacritic, the film has a score of 28 out of 100, based on 11 critics, indicating "generally unfavorable reviews".[14] Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "C" on an A+ to F scale.[12]

British film critic Mark Kermode gave the film a negative and short review, saying simply, "It's just not funny." [15]
