Jamion Christian (born April 18, 1982) is an American college basketball coach. He is the current and 22nd head coach of men’s basketball at Mount St. Mary's University.

Biography

Christian was born and raised in Quinton, Virginia. As a shooting guard, he led New Kent High School to a VHSL State Championship with a 26-0 record and earned the VHSL Group A State Player of the Year honors.

Christian then became a shooting guard and a three-year captain for Mount St. Mary’s University under head coaches Jim Phelan and Milan Brown. His career stats included 581 points in 90 career games and 56 starts. His 11.3 points per game during the 2001-02 season led the team in scoring.

Assistant Coaching Career

Christian began his coaching career as an assistant at Emory and Henry College (2004-06) and later as manager of basketball operations at Bucknell University (2006-2008). He would then become an assistant under Tony Shaver at William & Mary Tribe men's basketball (2008-2011). The Tribe’s 2010 recruiting class was recognized as among the best in “Mid-Major” classes in the country and the best in CAA by ESPN.com and Scouts, Inc. The Tribe also won 22 games that season, third most in school history. Christian would then serve as an assistant coach at Virginia Commonwealth (2011-12) under head coach Shaka Smart, helping the Rams to the third round of the NCAA tournament with a school record 29 wins.

Head Coaching Career

Mount St. Mary's University hired Christian as head men’s basketball coach on March 26, 2012. Christian’s up-tempo offense and “mayhem” defense – comparable to VCU’s "havoc" defense, popularized by Smart – proved to be a challenging yet ultimately successful transition for the Mountaineers, as the team started the 2012-13 campaign with a 7-12 overall (2-6 NEC) record but finished the regular season by winning 9 of its next 10 games. The Mount qualified for the NEC Tournament for the first time since the 2009-10 season as a No. 5 seed with a 16-13 overall (11-7 NEC) regular season record. In the NEC tournament, Mount St. Mary’s upset No. 4 seed Bryant University 75-69 and No. 1 seed Robert Morris 69-60 and will face No. 3 seed LIU-Brooklyn in the NEC Championship game on Tuesday, March 12, 2013.
