Sohaib Athar (born 1977 April 8) is a Pakistani resident of Abbottabad who provided the first public information about the killing of Osama Bin Laden on 2011 May 2.[1]

Without at first realizing what he was reporting,[2] Sohaib Athar sent the information via Twitter.[3]

He soon found himself deluged by media requests even while United States President Barack Obama was on television to confirm that United States Navy SEALs commandos had conducted the lethal raid on the Abbottabad compound identified as Bin Laden's hideout.[4]

Sohaib Athar is a computer software IT consultant.[5] He holds a bachelor of science degree in mathematics and physics from Forman Christian College and a master of science from University of the Punjab—both in Lahore, Pakistan.[6] He is married and has a son (born in 2004). His web site has occasionally sought to analyze terrorism.[7]
