Proposal to remove the Liberation War sector table

The table re sectors in the Bangladesh War should be moved into Mukti Bahini with a shorter thinner reference here. This article should be generic about the Bangladesh Army in its present shape with proportionately sized history section.AshLin (talk) 08:19, 7 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with this proposal by AshLin - the article should be more generic to the Bangladesh Army, with a focus on its current structure and formation. The information in the table is very detailed and specific, i.e. it relates to one phase in the history of the Bangladesh Army and it should therefore proprobably be moved to the article that focuses upon the Bangladesh Liberation War itself. I have now found that the table containing information on Sectors in the Bangladesh Liberation War has been turned into a full article. It can be found at List of sectors in Bangladesh Liberation War. As such, I believe that the table should be removed from the article on the Bangladesh Army, as this article should be more generally focused. I propose to remove this and put a link into the text to the other full article relating to the various sectors. I will do so under the assumption that no one has voiced any opinion against this since it was proposed by AshLin a couple of months ago. If there are later objections, please feel free to discuss. Query regarding rank structure

The article lists three warrant officer ranks (Master Warrant Officer, Senior Warrant Officer and Warrant Officer) under the collective heading "Junior Commissioned Officers". Can anyone confirm if this is accurate, and if so can a source be cited for it? I am only going by my understanding of ranks based on service in the Australian Army (and as such admit I do not have knowledge specifically relating to the Bangladesh Army), where warrant officers are not considered 'commissioned' officers - they are "non-commissioned officers" due to the fact that they hold a "warrant" from the Queen (or Sovereign) as opposed to a 'commission' such as that which is held by second lieutenants and above. Additionally, a private would not be considered a non-commissioned officer, as such, rather that term would be applied to lance-corporals and above up to the rank of Warrant Officer. Hello, I am replying to your enquiry although it is dated long back (just in case you didn't find an answer by now).

In Bangladesh Army Junior Commissioned Officers (commonly called JCOs) are those officers who rise from the ranks of the Non Commissioned Officers. A Sergeant is promoted to the rank of Warrant Officer then Senior Warrant Officer and finally Master Warrant Officer based on capabilty and qualities of the officer as per requirment and need of the army.

Please note that Master Sergeant, Staff Sergeant/Company Quartermaster & Sergeant Major are more of designations and not actual ranks based on seniority in a particular unit, regiment or brigade. Extremely qualified or deserving Master Warrant Officers are given the honorary rank of a Captain upon retirement.

Similar procedure applies for Bangladesh Rifles (border guards of bangladesh)); the Bangladesh Air Force recruits JCOs directly as well as promotes the deserving Non Commissioned Officers to the ranks of JCOs. The Bangladesh Navy do not have JCOs but promotes the deserving Non Commissioned Officers to the first rank of a Commissioned Officer; however that is the highest rank they will ever achieve. --Incognito1980 08:41, 2 May 2009 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Incognito1980 (talk • contribs)

Mir Shawkat Ali

A recent edit added Mir Shawkat Ali as the seventh chief of staff, from 1982 to September 1986. This needs to be sourced - see eg [1] which lists him as high commissioner in London from July 1986, and [2] and [3] which has him retiring from the army in 1981 to become high commissioner to Egypt. according to www.iiss.org (^[1]) the original size of this army is 1,26,150 personnel.

Merger Proposal

I propose that Bangladesh Army Aviation Group be merged into Bangladesh Army. I think that the content in the Bangladesh Army Aviation Group article can easily be explained in the context of Bangladesh Army, and the Bangladesh Army article is of a reasonable size that the merging of Bangladesh Army Aviation Group will not cause any problems as far as article size or undue weight is concerned. Currently, this article contains nothing about Bangladesh Army Aviation Group. So, that page should exist seperately until the descriptions are added to Bangladesh Army page. Osmani was not promoted as General in Liberation War

There is a line in "Early History" as follows "M. A. G. Osmani was reinstated into active duty and promoted to General as the Commander-in-Chief of the Bangladesh Forces." but he was not promoted as General until Aprill, 1972 after independence. At the liberation war, he was reinstated as a colonel.
