The distance to S Serpentis has been measured using [[radio]] [[astrometry]] by the VERA project. The [[apparent magnitude]] of S Serpentis vary between 7.5 and 14 across a period of 370.4 days, a range of 400 times in brightness. It was first discovered to be variable in 1828 by [[Karl Harding]].<ref name=aavso/>
