Orphaned non-free media (Image:Favrejetsmadden.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:Favrejetsmadden.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:22, 13 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

August 2008

Welcome to Wikipedia. The recent edit you made to Brett Favre has been reverted, as it appears to have removed content from the page without explanation. Use the sandbox for testing; if you believe the edit was constructive, ensure that you provide an informative edit summary. You may also wish to read the introduction to editing. Thank you. Brett Favre pic

Are you talking about Image:New Madden NFL 09 Coverart.jpg? The image would only be allowed in an article about Madden 09, and not about Favre. This one, on the other hand, looks like it's legit. --Mosmof (talk) 23:03, 13 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure I understand your question. Fair use means that a copyrighted work is being used without the owner's permission, but it's considered allowable since it's needed to discuss or comment on the image. All the photographs of Favre used in the article are free images whose owners released them from copyright (except for the Madden '09 cover, which is used to discuss the cover). --Mosmof (talk) 23:47, 15 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Jason Donald infobox

To be honest, I'm not that good with templates and boxes, so I'm probably the wrong person to ask. It looks like you have the infobox figured out, though, but I did some minor fixes and refining. Good luck!. --Mosmof (talk) 22:43, 14 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Your recent edit to the Houston Texans article

Hello. Please don't forget to provide an edit summary, which wasn't included with your recent edit to Houston Texans. The removal of several sections without an edit summary will be interpreted as vandalism and will almost always be reverted. Thanks. Zzyzx11 (Talk) 15:19, 9 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Pennsylvania's 7th congressional district

Thanks for experimenting with the page Pennsylvania's 7th congressional district on Wikipedia. Your recent edit appears to have added incorrect information, and has been reverted or removed. He is recognized as running as an independent, and not part of some "Independent Party" in all states. He may be running under some party's banners in some states, but those are insignificant compared to his national status as an independent. Just because he is running as a candidate of the Independent Party in Minnesota doesn't mean he's doing it everywhere, therefore such a designation is both wrong and misleading. —kurykh 02:57, 1 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed deletion of Shannon Royer

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Shannon Royer, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because, even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. ... discospinster talk 17:53, 4 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to Wikipedia. Please do not remove Articles for deletion notices from articles, or remove other people's comments in Articles for deletion debates, as you did with Shannon Royer. Otherwise, it may be difficult to create consensus. If you oppose the deletion of an article, please comment at the respective page instead. Thank you. ... discospinster talk 14:24, 11 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Images

Hi. Note that http://www.pennsylvania.gov/ is a state website, not a U.S. Federal government site. It is clearly marked "Copyright © 2008 Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. All Rights Reserved". PD-USGov does not apply to material from that site. Another point, please sign messages on talk pages. Thanks. -- Infrogmation (talk) 01:24, 14 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Image:Sarah Palin 2006 Official.jpg

Sorry, but Image:Sarah Palin 2006 Official.jpg is not licensed under a free license. You are right to look for images from federal sources, which would make them public domain under {{PD-USGov}}. However, the particular image that you found in a federal newsletter is actually Palin's official portrait and belongs to the State of Alaska. The fact that it was used in a federal newsletter doesn't mean that Alaska gave up its copyright ownership.

If you are interested, the feds used the image under a fair use/publicity guise. Wikipedia actually has a stricter fair use policy than what US copyright law requires. You can read it at: Wikipedia:Non-free content. So, while the feds and news agencies can use that photo under fair use, Wikipedia has a policy of not allowing such use. (I can explain the reasons if you like). It is also possible that the feds used the image with permission, which would still not allow Wikipedia to use the image, since we require a free license (like {{cc-by-sa}} or {{GFDL}}).

I know this can be complicated, so you might want to ask someone for help before uploading more images. It might be tricky at first, but you can get the hang of it soon.--HoboJones (talk) 02:39, 18 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

October 2008

Welcome, and thank you for experimenting with Wikipedia. Your test on the page Joseph B. Scarnati worked, and it has been reverted or removed. Please take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. If you would like to experiment further, please use the sandbox or show preview button. Thank you. You need to be more careful with your edits. This one messed up the whole infobox. --HoboJones (talk) 03:19, 18 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The Lt. Gov is in there, just leave the infobox be. His Senate position is on top because, well, he'll (probably) continue to be senator after he's done being Lt. Gov in 2011. Also, be careful with uploading pictures. You have been warned repeatedly about them, and I suggest that you ask someone if the licenses are OK (ask me if you like) before you upload any more. If you keep doing it, some cranky admin will block you for a while. --HoboJones (talk) 22:36, 18 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Craig Williams

I am afraid that Craig Williams does not appear to be notable enough for a WP article. As with Marina Kats and Tom Manion, the individual is not notable. The race was notable. Anything that Williams has is gleaned from the race, which is why the article was re-directed to United States House of Representatives elections in Pennsylvania, 2008#District_7. You are going to need a very compelling argument if this is to survive an AFD. The standard that I and others use is whether or not the person would be notable had they not run for office. Heath Shuler as an example was notable already as an NFL play and would have remained so had he won or lost. Craig Williams was an ordinary person with no claim to notability prior to his race. Speedy deletion of Shannon Royer

A tag has been placed on Shannon Royer requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for biographies.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the article does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that a copy be emailed to you. Non-dropframe (talk) 23:33, 23 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Photo

The recent photo that was added to Tom Corbett referencing USASearch.gov is not a free public domain image of the US Government. I clicked on the link provided and got to this page. The notice at the top clearly states "The images you find in USA.gov’s Image Search results may be protected by copyright. If you would like to use any images you find through USA.gov’s Image Search, we advise you to contact the site owner for permission." Indeed, the page is a re-direct to the Attorney Generals website TastyPoutine talk (if you dare) ] 00:23, 2 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

      • I understand if you are confused--but the website www.attorneygeneral.gov is not a Federal site, it belongs to the Pennsylvania Attorney General. Look at the bottom on the page: "The content of this site is the property of the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General. Reuse of this content requires permission of the Press Office." I can see where you would be confused. Also, don't worry about getting a Corbett photo, because I got one: commons:Image:TomCorbett-McCainRally2008.jpg. Don't place it on the page yet, since it is awaiting OTRS confirmation.

PS-USGov Images

Since you seem interested in uploading images, here's some advice that might be helpful for you. The copyright of an image belongs to whoever took the photo. With few exceptions, it doesn't matter who or what the subject of the photo is. Whoever owns the copyright of a photo has full ownership of it and can choose to distribute it however they see fit. That's why uploading someone else's images is not allowed. In effect, when someone uploads someone else's images, that is stealing their property.

I see that, like me, you are interested in politics. Luckily for us, the Federal government has passed a law saying that any work done by any employee of the federal government (when they're on duty) is to be released into the public domain. This means that anyone can use it in any way, including uploading it to Wikipedia. This includes any memos, laws, emails, or photos. It also includes members of the Armed Forces, Department of State, CIA, and Congress. (Note, some things are restricted by being classified, but you won't find that stuff.)

So, with that in mind, almost anything you find on a Congressman's website is going to be PD-USGov-Congress. Now, sometimes these websites have material that is not produced by government employees, so you must still be cautious. Over the last few days, I have uploaded a bunch of such photos to commons:Category:Phil English & commons:Category:John E. Peterson. You might want to check out these images and note how I recorded their licensing information to get an idea of what you have to do to make sure your images are not deleted for false or lack of licensing information.

Here's a good example of an AP photo appearing on a US Government website, so it cannot be uploaded as PD-USGov: [1]. Note that the imae caption says "(© AP Images)".

Along the same lines, things produced by other governments are not considered PD-USGov. This a local municipalities and state governments. So, things at http://www.pahouse.com/Deweese/ are all still copyrighted. Please remember that www.attorneygeneral.gov is owned by the Pennsylvania Attorney General, and not the US Attorney General.

You have used USASearch.gov a few times, and you need to be careful for that, since not everything there is owned by the US government. You can, however use it to find good PD-USGov photos, like many of the ones I uploaded here: commons:Category:Melissa Hart. In conclusion you just need to be very careful and use common sense when uploading images. Good luck!--HoboJones (talk) 21:18, 2 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Jeb Bush Image

  • Rockyobody--you were right about this Jeb Bush photo. Good work using PD-FL. I have fixed the problem, so you should be good to go.--HoboJones (talk) 01:07, 4 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
    • Let me investigate a little on the Jeb Bush photo--it most definitely falls under Public Domain, since Florida, much like the Federal government, has made all official work Public Domain. It won't be deleted, I think there is a snafu with the PD-FLGov tagThis is what it is supposed to look like. Take at look at what I did for the Jeb photo--that should do the trick for now.
    • Florida is one of the very few states that actually have done so. The Rendell photo is still copyright the PA government, so no, that wouldn't be PD. Thanks for asking, though. The copyright thing is a little tricky at first, but you can get the hang of it.--HoboJones (talk) 04:45, 4 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Page Protection Question

Well, if you want to have a page protected, you can make a request at Wikipedia:Requests for page protection. However, I have looked over the Jeb Bush page and I they will deny your request. They only like to grant such requests where there is a sustained effort to vandalize over a long period. I don't really see that in the edit history, in fact, this is the only vandalism that I can see.

You might want to take a look at Wikipedia:Vandalism. If someone is vandalizing, the first step to to fix it, and if you want to, you can warn the user. But, be very careful before you do this! WP:WARN has how you can do that.

I get the sense that you are trying to become a productive editor, which is great. Recently, you have done some important maintenance work on some PA political pages, especially at Pennsylvania gubernatorial election, 2010. So, let me make some suggestions for you:

  1. Most important thing: start a userpage. See Wikipedia:User page for more information.
  2. Consider archiving your talk page, since it contains some material that is not very flattering. This will help you establish a good reputation. See: Help:Archiving a talk page. If nothing else, you can delete all of the warnings on your talkpage.
  3. Use a sandbox to experiment with Wikipedia codes. I have started one for you here:User:Rockyobody/Sandbox. Very important: get the hang of using "diffs," which are ways that editors can point out important edits that have happened in the past. See WP:DIFF.
  4. Take a look at Wikipedia:Adopt-a-User and see if it is for you. It pairs newer editors with other more experienced editors. I am happy to answer any specific (especially copyright related) questions that you may have, but I am thinking that you might need some more attention than I can give you.

Those are the main things for now. Good luck,--HoboJones (talk) 03:41, 5 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

My talk page

Your edits have been reverted there. I patiently await your very good explanation for why you did what you did there. Protonk (talk) 22:35, 7 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Last time

Your edit summaries here and here violate WP:NPOV. Your Jeb Bush photo's source is still not right, the image is not at the link you gave, so this edit is not appropriate. You gotta show where you found your images, and you can't seem to do that. Also, please do not say "fucked up" on my talk page. This language may be fine for the playground or the naval yard, but it has no place on my talk page.

After 6 months you seem to lack the basic skills of a Wikipedian. You make messes of pages and images and then ask me help you clean them up, which I am happy to do, except that you never learn to do these things yourself. You've been blocked indefinitely from commons and were already blocked here for 1 week, with a promise that you would begin to learn. Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Archive177#Persistent Copyvios from User:Rockyobody.

I gave you 4 suggestions above to help you be a helpful contributor, and you don't seem to have done any of them. I'll help people, but I won't baby-sit them. Please, seek someone else to help you out, and do not write any form of the word f*ck in any context on my talk page again.--HoboJones (talk) 03:04, 9 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
