The World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) Divas Championship is a professional wrestling championship in World Wrestling Entertainment. It is competed for by WWE Divas only and is exclusive to the SmackDown brand.
History
As a result of the WWE Brand Extension in 2002, the WWE Women's Championship was made exclusive to the Raw brand. Thereafter, only WWE Diva's on the Raw brand were able to compete for the WWE Women's Championship, while the WWE Divas on the SmackDown brand were unable to compete for a womens-exclusive championship. This led to the creation of the WWE Divas Championship, which was announced on June 6 2008 during an episode of SmackDown by the General manager, Vickie Guerrero. The championship was officially unveiled on July 4 2008, during an episode of SmackDown, where the championship belt was shown. Natalya and Michelle McCool won respective matches to win an opportunity to compete for the championship in a singles match, which would determine the inaugural champion.
