West Africa Command was a Command of the British Army.

History

The Command was formed in June 1940 by Lieutenant General George Giffard around the Royal West African Frontier Force as an important recruiting ground for allied servicemen and women during World War II: it recruited 200,000 soldiers for the allies while defending itself from Vichy aggression.[1] It was based at Achimota College in Accra[2] and was disbanded in 1956.[3]

After disbandment, its infrastructure supported the development of the new Ghana Army.

Its insignia (a leaning palm tree) is still worn today by members of the British Peace Support Team, Ghana, including personnel based at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre.
