The 2024 Kurdistan Region parliamentary election will be held on 20 October 2024.[1] Seats to the Kurdistan Region Parliament will be elected.[2]
Background
[edit]The 2024 parliamentary elections are set to be held after a two year delay. In February 2024, the Supreme Court of Iraq initially dismantled the 11 seats reserved to minorities, reducing the Parliamentary seats from 111 to 100.[3] Nonetheless, the court partially walked back its decision by reallocating five of the 100 seats to minorities:[4] three to Christians (2 Assyrian, 1 Armenian) and two to Turkmen.[5] Women must comprise at least 30% of elected members.
Moreover, the electoral system was changed, with members being elected by open-list proportional representation using the Hare quota in four constituencies corresponding to the region's four governorates:[6][3] Duhok, Erbil, Halabja and Sulaymaniyah.[7]
Governorate | General seats | Minority seats |
---|---|---|
Sulaymaniyah | 36 | 2 (1 Assyrian, 1 Turkmen) |
Erbil | 32 | 2 (1 Assyrian, 1 Turkmen) |
Duhok | 24 | 1 (Armenian) |
Halabja | 3 | 0 |
Total | 95 | 5 |
