Abraham Mulamoottil is a Catholic priest, an author, a teacher, an innovator, and a philosopher. He obtained his PhD from the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium. He is the founder and became the Principal of MACFAST (Mar Athanasios College for Advanced Studies, Tiruvalla).[1] He also introduced unique post graduate courses like MSc Bioinformatics, MSc Plant Biotechnology, MSc Food Science & Technology and MSc Phytomedical Science for the first time in Kerala.[2]
Mulamoottil also served as chair and chief executive of Pushpagiri Group of Medical Institutions, Tiruvalla. His vision was influential during the construction of the St. John's Cathedral, Tiruvalla.[3] He founded the first campus community radio in Kerala, RADIO MACFAST 90.4 FM.[4] He also pioneered the first and largest solar project in Kerala.[5] He is the chief organiser of Centre for Innovation and Development of Affordable Technologies (CIDAT), which is a start up platform and hub for innovation resource facilities in Tiruvalla, Kerala, India.[6] As the president of Central Chambers, he led an international business delegation to the Dubai Expo 2020 and to the Ninth Edition of Manama Entrepreneurship Week (MEW 2024), Bahrain.[7]
Abraham Mulamoottil was honoured with the UAE Golden Visa by the Dubai Government in recognition of his contributions as a literary writer.[8]
Biography
[edit]Mulamoottil Achen was born the fifth of six children to Mariamma and M. V. Varughese on 24 November 1954. He attended M.G.M. High School, Thiruvalla and SB College Changanassery, later joining IMM Seminary in 1970. He was entrusted with several key positions in the music ministry due to him being known as a singer at the major seminary, including the choirmaster of the Apostolic Seminary at Vadavathoor, Kottayam from 1973 to 1980.[9]
In 1998, he had the opportunity to conduct the Malayalam choir during a Holy Mass at the Asian Bishops Synod held in Vatican. The (late) Pope John Paul II was the main celebrant at this Eucharistic Celebration. He left for higher education in 1991 to Belgium for post-graduation studies at Brussels and joined for Doctoral studies at Catholic university of leuven.[10]
Professional career
[edit]After obtaining his PhD from the K. U. Leuven, Belgium (1998), Rev. Dr. Mulamoottil, founded and became the Principal of MACFAST (Mar Athanasios College for Advanced Studies Tiruvalla) in 2001. He also introduced the first MSc courses in Kerala for Bioinformatics, Plant Biotechnology, Food Science & Technology, and Phytomedical Science & Technology. He initiated the decentralized 'Clean and Green Project' for MACFAST and extended it to the Tiruvalla Municipality.[11] He also promoted experiential learning at MACFAST, beginning with the distribution and marketing of the movie 'The Passion of the Christ' in Kerala.[12]
Afterwards, he became the chairman and Chief Executive of Pushpagiri Group of Medical Institutions, Tiruvalla. His work led to St. John's Metropolitan Cathedral being by 'Incredible India' in 2004.[13] He founded one of the first community radio projects in Kerala in 2009, RADIO MACFAST 90.4 FM. He pioneered the first and biggest Solar project in Kerala in 2011, installing a 30 kW Solar Power Plant at MACFAST and a 'Vellavum Velichavum' (Water and Solar) 100 kW Solar Electricity and R.O. Water Plant. The plant produced 10,000 litres of water per hour at Pushpagiri, serving as a model for rural water schemes.
He has been the chairman of peacepeopleplanet.org since 2013, which is an agency for the promotion of healthcare, education, green energy, environment and research as well as planning, designing and coordinating CSR activities of firms and establishments.[14] He has also set up store for the organisation which produces energy efficient products. He is a nominated member of the District Innovation Council, Pathanamthitta, Government of Kerala.[15]
He is the chief organiser of the Centre for Innovation and Development of Affordable Technologies (CIDAT), which is a start up platform and hub for innovation resource facilities in Tiruvalla, Kerala, India. The centre is expanding its base in close association with Kerala Startup Mission, Government of Kerala, India for the establishment of Technology Business Incubator (TBI) at Tiruvalla.[6]
Presently, he is the President, of the Central Travancore Chamber of Commerce and Industry which is a registered association for the promotion and the development of business and industry in the Central Travancore region comprising 4 Districts of Kerala, India - Kottayam, Pathanamthitta, Idukki and Alappuzha[7] The “Central Chambers” is affiliated with the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM, and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).[16]
Recently, he started a new project “TALKS INDIA” which is driven by the belief that "human consciousness is the unique faculty of acquiring knowledge and critical thinking." The mission of the project is encapsulated in the motto "Lead India Towards Knowledge Society". Led by the Kottayam Public Library and Mulamoottil Achen Foundation,TALKS INDIA launched its inaugural chapter by Tushar Gandhi, the great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi on 9 September 2024 to engage, inspire, and educate.[17]
