From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Raül Fernández Miró (Barcelona, 1976), better known as Raül Refree, is a Spanish music producer, musician and composer.

Career

[edit]

Raül Refree is one of the most acclaimed Spanish producers of the last decade. His stylistic breadth and versatility have led him to have a profile that ranges from experimental musician to producer of pop stars or composer of award-winning soundtracks. [1] [2]

Interested from the beginning in the renewal of traditional music, Raül Refree has become in recent years the name of reference for new flamenco in Spain working alongside names that have grown up under his sound such as Rosalía, Sílvia Pérez Cruz[3], Rocío Márquez or Niño de Elche.  His album with Rosalía, as a co-author, artist, producer, guitarist and arranger, Los Ángeles, has been a Gold record several times. Stars like Ricky Martin claim his talent while he continues to bet on new talents to discover, as Rodrigo Cuevas or Guitarricadelafuente or Maestro Espada

He publishes alongside experimenters like Sonic Youth's Lee Ranaldo, producing the last three albums of Lee Ranaldo [4] and making the last one, “Names Of North End Women” (MUTE, 2020), in duet with the author have caused the name of Raül Refree to be more and more known across the Atlantic. His presence as a producer in Sonic Youth’s studio, Echo Canyon West, where he has worked with Sharon Van Etten, Nels Cline or Kid Millons for example, has made Raül Refree's name increasingly well-known.

His album with the Portuguese singer Lina, where Raül Refree has revisited traditional Portuguese music, Fado, was one of the most valued of 2020 by the European press media such as Telegram, Pitchfork or Pop Matters, being chosen best album of the year by the European Broadcasting Union. Also his production for the Puerto Rican singer Ricky Martin (Pausa, 2020) and the collaboration with C. Tangana (El Madrileño, 2021) earned him a pair of Latin Grammys in the corresponding editions.

Recently, he has continued to research popular music from around the world [5], collaborating with singers such as Rokia Koné (Mali) or Maria Mazzotta (Italy), with whom he opened the 26th Fira Mediterrània Manresa with the multidisciplinary show directed by Raül, Evoé!

But Raül's musical life is even broader. He is also a prominent composer and musician who publishes under his most personal project, Refree; he composes acclaimed soundtracks for films and tv shows, such as La Mesías (TV series), One year, One night, Muyeres or Entre dos aguas, and has a discography brimming with projects without genre corsets. Raül only understands music as an exercise in creation and research in freedom [5].
