  • Is the stadium expansion and upgrade friendly, provided that the economics work in the future?

Who else is looking forward to the completion of this stadium? J3wishVulcan 04:40, 10 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Why don't the stands have a roof? CalJW 06:10, 21 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

This stadium seems low budget to me. Sure it costs $62 million and seats 20 000, but my dream is that Canada could host an actual world cup (2018). But those require 60 000 person stadiums and much better designs. This is deffently a great start, but I just wish Soccer was taken more seriously here. I will still like to watch some games in this stadium tho. 007craft 08:12, 1 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry dude, don't get your hopes up. Canada will never ever ever host a world cup. We will never get the support for it to build the 10 or so 60,000 seat stadiums that FIFA requires. So there's no reason to build stadia that big. Also, with regards to the 20,000 seats at BMO -- that's a reasonable number considering it's just beginning (it can easily be expanded later if interest warrants. 20,000 is not that far away from the average attendance in some European leagues. The AVG attendance in the English Premiership is about 33,000. AVG attendance in the Italian Serie A is about 20,000. AVG Attendance in the Spanish Premier league is about 24,000. So for a stadium in a city that is just developing it's local team, 20,000 is just about right.

it wud be great to have a 60,000 seat stadium except for the fact that theyll be probly about 15,000 fans at each TFC home game for now... this is a good start Soccer fan 20:36, 2 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It's not soccer; it's football!!! Smokie81

The stadium needs to be completed for the start of the FIFA Youth WC next summer, let's not forget this. I hear people critizing the stadium and it's simpleness, but the fact of matter is that we have a limited time frame to work with. I'm sure that if MLSE (owners of Toronto FC) had a larger amount of time to work with they'd have a better design for the stadium, maybe of a higher capacity as well. We also do not need a thirty-thousand plus seater. MLS wants teams to build their own SSS's, with reasonable capacities to give them a better atmosphere and to avoid the half-full, half-empty feeling that comes with gigantic college football stadiums. --Jay-wolf 06:23, 9 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm English, but am moving to Toronto this year an as such have been following the TFC story with some interest. BMO field is certainly very different from most of the stadiums we have here in that it has a shallow rake to the stands and no roof. I have a feeling that this may have a bit of a negative effect on the atmosphere, although that is of course down to the attitude of the fans themselves. It's worth looking at 2 new stadiums opened this year by English league 1 (2 levels below premiership) teams. One is Doncaster Rovers Keepmoat ground (15,000 @ £32m) and the other is Swansea City's New Liberty Stadium http://www.liberty-stadium.com/ (20,000 @ £27m).

One other thing. Does anyone know if BMO field is complete yet. Not long to go now!

  • You're likely to find that a stadium that seats 20 000 having 10 or 12 guys in the stands kills the atmosphere more. ;) In all seriousness, it's planned to open in the spring, AFAICT. WilyD 16:30, 19 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Where?

[edit]

I'm not very familiar with Toronto, but I can't find this thing on MapQuest or Google Maps? Where the #eLL is it?!?! Kevlar67 16:56, 21 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The new stadium is located at Exhibition Place in Toronto. It will be located on Princes' Blvd. and Ontario Drive. Flibirigit 17:05, 21 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

it's too new to be seen on google maps yet. they haven't updated their satellite maps in a while.

Coordinates have been added. PKT(alk) 19:37, 1 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Pitch Dimensions

[edit]

Anyone know the dimensions of the pitch? I can't seem to find them anywhere. Or are they just 'standard' football pitch dimensions? Iansmcl 14:29, 29 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Field of play dimensions are 75 yards wide x 115 yards long. A Canadian football field (65 x 110 yards) could conceivably fit into the stadium as the end zone seats are also far enough back to allow for this field plus 15 yard end zones if wanted - as was once the case with the Memphis Mad Dogs of the Canadian Football League.[1]Likemike1

i removed info about the field size in terms of the CFL. I don't see any reason for speculative information about the potential fit of a CFL field within an article about a soccer field.

The field dimensions should be in meters, with yards in brackets. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.50.227.215 (talk) 14:28, 1 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Irony?

[edit]

Anyone else think its a little ironic that the TorontoFC's field is named after the bank of montreal, considering the rivalry between those two cities ? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.48.115.79 (talk) 21:39, 15 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I also noticed that early on. Please view the article Toronto-Montreal rivalry for more information about it. The Bank of Nova Scotia, better known as Scotiabank, has its head office in Toronto, despite its Nova Scotia name (it is founded in that province). In other words, this irony should be noted in the article. Johnny Au (talk) 16:56, 24 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Are we sure Lombardo scored the first Canadian goal? I remember him putting one in the net but it was called back in the game against Aston Villa as he was offside. I don't remember him scoring another. His wikipedia entry has no mention of it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Kooper Ca (talkcontribs) 04:40, 24 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Where's the irony? Bank of Montreal has been headquartered in Montreal for years. They are simply celebrating that they own Montreal - clearly demonstrated by the Impact's poor performance against TFC. :) Nfitz (talk) 04:06, 7 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

BMO Field Expansion

[edit]

Anyone heard anything about possibly expanding BMO field to include more seating? The stadium has been packed for every game and season tickets sold out so quickly, so I was wondering if TFC was considering expanding the stadium. --Crosscountrycpjon 20:57, 18 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • We likely won't see a seating expansion or any similarconstruction work until the club can prove the interest for pro soccer in Toronto can justify such costs. At the moment, a few field level bar tables and stools have been placed in front of the East Stands, but those are a temporary addition. If there is a major expansion of seats, it will likely be in the North End stands where the Carlsberg Beer Garden is located. 99.242.233.33 08:17, 30 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

the part currently in the piece regarding the schedule for expansion of the stadium is unsourced. Please add citations or remove the information. Toronto FC's Paul Beirne has only publicly said that no expansion is imminent and that only in perhaps 10 years will they consider this (See Red Patch Live! video on Google videos). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.12.14.130 (talk) 02:42, 31 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

why did someone remove the gallery of pictures? the user then justified the move of the gallery by saying he/she included the "best" pictures within the article... one of the so called best pictures was of the scoreboard..... huh? If you're going to remove most of the pictures and then keep only a few, why would you keep 1 of the scoreboard? there are far better pictures of the STADIUM than one of the scoreboard all by itself.

how is someone supposed to find such galleries when they come to the BMO Field page? and who's decision is it to choose which are the "best" pictures for this BMO Field page?

All the images go in the gallery, which is linked with a little box like that on the right ->

can the box be placed in a more noticeable position? it's unclear to new users where the photos are. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.12.6.250 (talk) 15:14, 12 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

External links is the usual place for it, but I don't care much. It's just {{commons}} if you want to play with its position. WilyD 15:18, 12 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Artificial Grass

[edit]

As BMO Field is used for soccer, then why do they use artificial grss instead of real grass?Reverend Edward Brain, D.D. (talk) 03:33, 10 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The stadium was partly funded by the city, hence it was obligated to be available for community use so that didn't suite a natural surface at the time. Eventually the surface became so worn down that they either needed to install a new artificial turf or just switch to grass. MLSE(Toronto FC's owners) made a deal with the city to move the community usage nearby and provide extra public facilities. It's being converted to grass for the start of the 2010 season. Quake on the Lake

[edit]

According to the article List of nicknames for sports clubs and stadiums#Canada, BMO Field is given the nickname "Quake on the Lake." Is there a source for this nickname? Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 00:16, 8 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I've never heard that before, pretty sure it's made up. Noonehasthisnameithink (talk) 06:40, 8 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I have never heard of it before as well. It might be original research, which is not allowed. Should we remove the "Quake on the Lake" nickname from the other article to prevent confusion? After all, that article has numerous factual problems. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 13:55, 8 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The discussion is moot, since the List of nicknames for sports clubs and stadiums article is deleted as non-encyclopedic. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 20:03, 18 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

National Soccer Stadium?

[edit]

Is it still called National Soccer Stadium when it holds national team games?--SaskatchewanSenator (talk) 06:08, 4 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yes. BMO is not a sponsor of any of FIFA's games. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 14:40, 4 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The article and infobox should reflect that. The article will be easy to change, but the Stadium infobox doesn't have an 'alternate name' field. I guess we could add it.--SaskatchewanSenator (talk) 21:38, 4 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Though it is being called the National Soccer stadium again for this year's FIFA U20 World Cup. So it seems to only by FIFA tournaments, rather than FIFA events, for which this is an issue. Though why FIFA is concerned about this, which only serves to confuse and confound casuals, rather than worry about their internal corruption issues, is beyond me ... but I guess that's the topic for a different forum. Nfitz (talk) 17:23, 23 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
It all comes down to money. The issue is sponsorship exclusivity. IF FIFA is sponsored by TD Bank, they don't want to play in a stadium sponsored by the competition since it devalues their sponsorship agreements. The same thing happens with the IOC. Rogers Arena was known as "Canada Hockey Place" during the 2010 games. TDL (talk) 19:54, 23 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, likely does ... but confusing the locals, by moving ticket sales on Ticketmaster to "National Soccer Stadium" instead of "BMO Field" doesn't change the income, and could slow sales, who think it might be on some field in the middle of nowhere in rural Markham. Ironically the "corruption" issues are all about money too ... :) Nfitz (talk) 20:36, 23 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Canada Soccer will always use "BMO Field" for international matches and FIFA World Cup Qualifiers. Only during stand-alone FIFA competitions (FIFA U-20 World Cup Canada 2007 and FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup Canada 2014) will FIFA use the non-branded name "National Soccer Stadium" — Preceding unsigned comment added by 198.254.254.171 (talk) 22:30, 23 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Capacity

[edit]

Over the years we've seen surprisingly disparate figures for the current stadium capacity. Despite there being no increase (or reduction) in capacity that I'm aware of since the opening of the North Stand in 2010 the article currently references both a self-published January 2012 TFC website piece [2] listing 21,140 seats. Elsewhere the article quotes seating of 21,859 from the February 2012 self-published media guide [3], though the media guide also notes that there were only 21,140 at the beginning of 2010. The 2013 media guide [4] simply mentions the 21,140 capacity without the 21,859. The 2014 Media Guide [5] returns to the same text as the 2012 guide. In the last few weeksthere's been a series of reports to Toronto City Council (BMO Field is owned by the City of Toronto that note the current seating capacity is 21,566, these reports are found at [6], and the 21,566 seat claim is made both by reports from the City Manager [7] and from Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment [8].

So what number should we be using here? I'm tempted to go with 21,566 as surely the number reported to City Council is more reliable than in their PR materials. Nfitz (talk) 18:13, 23 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Endzones

[edit]

@Jwkozak91: Do you have a source for this edit? Last I read, the endzones were expected to be 17 yards: [9]. TDL (talk) 01:32, 13 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I see you have now changed it to 144 yards, but still no sources. I'm going to remove it until a source can be found. (The source I linked above does not say that it will be 144 yards, just that it is a possibility.) TDL (talk) 16:12, 13 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Edits by Qman

[edit]

Qman has been attempting to force a number of disruptive edits into this article by edit warring. For instance:

  • Listing the Argos first in the tenants in the infobox. This should be chronological.
  • Listing the first Argos points first under historical moments. Obviously this should be chronological.
  • Removing field dimensions without explanation
  • Adding unsourced claims on the number of seats in each deck. And no, "But I counted them all on ticketmaster" is not a WP:reliable source. That is WP:original research.

Please stop and seek WP:consensus for such changes. TDL (talk) 10:10, 9 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Nevermind, these accounts are all indefed for WP:SOCKing. See Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Qmanwiki. TDL (talk) 19:00, 9 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The user has also been trying to force their own, low-resolution images in. ViperSnake151  Talk  00:24, 10 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

New capacity sources

[edit]

Is there a source for the current Toronto FC capacity? I understand the capacity would have dropped a few hundred with the removal of the north end stands, so the value listed is likely correct, but I can't find a source anywhere online for the 30,228 figure. Everything I see gives a rounded figure of 30,000, but nothing exact. Harrison401 (talk) 03:52, 16 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Capacity

[edit]

The capacity of a stadium is the permanent seating capacity. Not temporary stands for special events. The information box reading: Capacity 34,000 (when expanded) & 40,148 (special events such as FIFA World Cup/Grey Cup) is misleading. That is an arbitrary number. Temporary seating stands can be any number. They could add 30,000 or 40,000 temporary seats if they wanted. The other Canadian MLS teams (BC Place & Saputo Stadium) don't do this. 174.95.4.183 (talk) 16:51, 20 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

It’s not arbitrary, that’s the max number it would be able to hold I fully expanded. The other two stadiums you mention don’t have it because those stadiums do not expand. Vaselineeeeeeee★★★ 17:05, 20 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
That is 100% incorrect. Saputo is very much expandable. Are you just making facts up or can you back up these claims? TD Place Stadium in Ottawa is expandable to over 40,000 as well. The expansion capacity is worth mentioning, but in it's current form it is very misleading and poorly worded. How can the expanded capacity be 34,000 but than hold 40,000 for special events? Is that a super-expansion? It's either one or the other. 174.95.4.183 (talk) 18:42, 20 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
