no refs?

[edit]

I'm wondering why until the two resources I just added arrived, this article had no references...is that because this was a "lift" from the main Vancouver Island article?Skookum1 (talk) 12:23, 27 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Good question - not sure personally, but could definitely use some further references and sources as an article of mid-level importance. JamesBay (talk) 04:45, 28 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I'll add some more further readings, I don't have time/energy to rewrite the article...wherever it came from...I'll check its date of creation vs the history of the main article on the Island as to the possibility the content came from there, in which case some of the sources on the other article could be migrated here.Skookum1 (talk) 07:09, 28 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Wow, goes back to 2006; @Fishhead64: isn't around any more but I'll ping him anyway just in case....and I note there are two external links on that edition of the page that aren't there anymore, not sure why they were taken out.......I'll compare the date of that to the island article's history now.Skookum1 (talk) 07:15, 28 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hm, don't see anything obvious; I checked the Colony of British Columbia (1866-1871) article-history and don't see anything there of that kind, though there's a few refs on there that might apply here; Fishhead64 mentioned in one edit comment, a few before that one, re the creation of the Mainland Colony article.....(Colony of British Columbia (1858-1866) so maybe there; not that these are all that "quality" refs, the further readings I have will be considerably better than cribbings from travel-based pages or the Canadian Dictionary of Biography Online.Skookum1 (talk) 07:24, 28 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I'm here, my dear Mr. @Skookum1:, but just none too active. Life is busy these days! Happy to see you active again, however. fishhead64 (talk) 03:42, 30 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Should that flag be on this page?

[edit]

If you dive into Flag of Vancouver Island you'll see that it states in the first paragraph that "...the flag itself likely never existed in the colonial period (1849-1866), but rather was re-created in 1988 as an unofficial local flag for Vancouver Island..." This is also supported by the page's references. There seems to be a firm consensus that this flag was probably never flown by Vancouver Island when it was a colony. I do believe the flag should be removed, but as a brand new user, I'm afraid to make such a large change. Does anyone back me up on this? SGxElPsyKongroo (talk) 19:33, 18 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

You're right: it does not belong here. I removed that flag from the article almost two years ago. Someone has put it back, but I did not notice at the time. I'll go ahead and remove it again. Indefatigable (talk) 21:24, 19 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

You're absolutely right. The 1988 Vancouver Island flag is a modern recreation that almost certainly did not exist during the existence of the colony. It was added again recently and was again removed. The correct flag that should be shown is the flag of the United Kingdom since the colony lacked a distinct flag.
